Errikland, more commonly called the Errikan Empire, is a large Imperial nation based in the region of nothern Mucro known as by that name. Though only just recently united by Emperor Christian I "the Great", this Empire is expanding in land and population, and is already the dominant force in most of Mucro.

Geography

[1]

Location:

Climate:

  • Very temperate, throughout most of the nation. There are great differences in the specific climate througout the nation, but they are genrally not extreme.

Terrain:

  • Much of Errikland was originally covered in forest, though parts have been cleared for farmland, urban sprawl, and various other purposes. This is especially true in the heavily agricultural southeast.

Elevation extremes:

  • lowest point: NA
  • highest point: NA

Errikland itself is divided into 47 provinces according to geography, climate, and cultural boundries. The eastern provinces are largly vast tracts of farmland, with a couple major rivers, while the north western provinces consist of forests and cities, holding much of the population. The most populous regions are the northern ones, which contain some of the large cities. The majority of the country is either forest, city, or farmland. Mountains dominate much of the southern provinces.

The nation is greatly interconnected, not just by the large rivers, but by the well developed highway, railway, and canal systems.

Arterus

The terrain in Errikan Arterus is largely covered in temperate forest, though some large sections have been cleared for agriculture and urban sprawl. The coastal areas are mostly either beautiful beaches, which serve as great tourist attractions, or rocky cliffs.

Resources

Errikland's large area and varied geography allows access to a variety of natural resources including timber, petroleum, natural gas, coal, uranium, and various metals including iron ore, copper, gold, silver, and gott. The biggest export of the nation is agricultural products, of which there is a great surplus, followed by manufactured goods. The rapid growth in population has put a strain on the large cities, but the fast advancement of various technologies as well as a steady rate of migration have kept this under control.

Errikan Arterus is rich in resources, most notably gold and oil. It is so rich in these that the price of oil in Mucro took a serious hit, and the rapid growth of the price of gold has slowed. These effects have been softened by major deals with other nations to export large quantities of these resources there. Other resources that are abundant in Arterus include tiber, various metals, uranium, and fish. Diamonds have been mined in great quantities on the island of Insula. Also, as some sections of forest have been cleared for timber, the newly cleared and often very fertile land has been devoted to agriculture.

Arterus is a major destination for Errikan migration.

Summary

When it comes to natural resources, Errikland is mostly self-reliant. The advanced recycle program coupled with mining leads to surpluses in most metals, while things that cannot be recycled well, such as oil, often cannot meet the high and rapidly growing demand. These must be imported. Frequently, the flexible Errikan economy adjusts to what is available, but the cheap and convenient supply of many resources such as oil and timber from Arterus has compensated the rarity of these resources.

The Errikan manufacturing base is very powerful, encouraged by the government’s economic libertarian policies and the heavy appetite of the Errikan military. These produce a major surplus in all manufacturing.

Though they have a strong manufacturing sector, the true power base of the Errikan economy is agriculture. There is a massive surplus in foodstuffs, a surplus which is largely exported.

Errikan Arterus is very rich in natural resources, and there has been significant investment in these, especially in the case of oil. This oil not only covers all Errikan needs, but makes it a major export to outside nations.

Errikan investors assure that Arterus’s metals are exploited on a massive scale. These metals are largely either shipped to factories in Errikland or shipped out to be sold to other nations, though quite a bit is used in the recently constructed factories in Errikan Arterus.

As most of Arterus is covered in forest, timber is a major resource that is exploited on a large scale in the Errikan “sustainable forestry”. As sections of forest are cleared, the area is used for agriculture, which produces a small food surplus.

Arterus is a major platform for Errikan weapon manufacturing. Major facilities exist across the continents, and these weapons are used by the Errikan military and other Weapson customers across the world. Fishing is the number two industry of Errikan Arterus.

All in all, the Errikan economy is largely an export-based economy, though it is capable of merely sustaining itself.

History

Early History

The region of Errikland has long been populated by a Germanic people, the ancestors of the current Errikans. Over time, many warring states arose, constantly viciously fighting each other and outsiders for dominance. It was in this climate that Errikan culture grew. There was a period of somewhat settled peace between the kingdoms beginning a hundred years before its founding. During this time, the fierce regionalism evolved very quickly into what would become Errikan naitonalism, especially under the repeated and brutal wars against outside forces. About 75 years before the founding of the Empire, the loose coalition of sates formed a loose nation.

For centuries since the original settlement of the area by the original Errikans, farming had always been the lifeline of northern Mucro, followed by mining. In the Middle Ages, most of the land was run by large numbers of rich planters who held vast estates worked primarily by servants who were little better than serfs, especially in southern Errikland. Slavery, though common further to the south, was all but inexistent in most of northern Mucro. This system existed for a time, but soon devolved with the majority of the former serfs becoming independent and forming small to medium estates of their own. This system lasted for most of Errikan history, but came to fall apart a little more than a century before the civil war. With the beginnings of the rise of true industry that followed the formation of the coalition, far more efficient methods of farming allowed smaller planters to cultivate more land and the larger landowners to lay off most of their servants. This led to dramatic drops in the prices of foodstuffs (as well as other agricultural products) and large sections of the Errikan poor suddenly finding themselves out of work, and, though many were able to move out and become small farmers themselves, the cities swelled with migrants from the countryside.

The rapid growth of cities and drop in prices of most necessary goods aided the growth of industry while it was in its infancy by providing plenty of labor and material. Errikland became the primary area of industry in the region, and was unsurpassed by the time of the civil war. A true middle class, which previously had been either nonexistent or based purely on the small farmers, sprung up seemingly out of thin air to represent a large part of the population and formed the backbone of the Errikan economy and culture. This also led to the growth of an urban poor, who would be the source of most labor for the burgeoning Errikan industry and the primary source of social unrest. This class, who formed the majority of the urban population, was made up primarily of former country poor and their descendents, but also had the majority of the poor, uneducated immigrants and other social and cultural outcasts.

Beginning about thirty years before the civil war, most industrial leaders had begun a major movement to make their industries more efficient, just as those in the country had done fifty years earlier, which also led to large amounts of the poor finding themselves without work. This dramatically aggravated the already precarious social balance with the urban poor. Radical ideologies, such as socialism and foreign fundamentalism, rose. In response, opposite, but frequently equally radical, ideologies were frequently embraced.

Leading up to the civil war, the groups split strongly into two camps. Conservative Nationalists, led by the recently unified National Christian Libertarian party and their young, charismatic leader Christian Victor, found strong support from conservative landowners, the strong capitalist middle class, and most military men. The Reform Socialists, led by second generation immigrant and devote socialist Wallace Talleyrand and radical Tarki leader Ray Kater, found great support from the urban and landless poor, immigrants, and progressives; additionally, they received the promise of support from the people of Youlando, who still resented the vast destruction they faced at the hands of the Errikans’ ancestors.

Errikan Civil War

When the Errikan Civil War erupted, it seemed it would be a very balanced, not to mention long, conflict between the Nationalists (who called themselves the Errikan Alliance) and the Socialists. However, previous preperation and early moves made by Christian Victor, named General Victor by the Nationalists, notably killing Wallace Tallyrand and obliterating Socialist forces at the Battle of Dicht Pass, quickly shifted the favors of the war. With the main Socialist army in central Errikland destroyed, the remainder of the loyal socialist forces fled to the fortified city of Wretterburg. There they hoped to hold out until their supporters from other cities in Errikland and elsewhere, most notably Youlando, relieved them. They knew that any siege of their position would last long enough for support to come.

So did General Victor.

Thus he ordered for a small part of his forces to dig in and maintain the siege while he led the rest of his forces on a brutal campaign to eliminate Socialist support throughout Errikland. Through brilliant tactics, shining bravery, and sheer ruthlessness this was achieved. The main major engagement during this period was the Battle of North Derchton, in which the Errikan Army defeated an overwhelming force of Youlandis with minor support from the socialists of Derchton. With enemy resistence reduced to the single city of Wretterburg. He returned to that siege by winter, readying his troops for the final assault. His artillery bombarded the enemy position day and night, but the defenses held strong. At the first melting of the snow, after a serious bombardment, a major attack began on the northeastern defenses of Wretterburg. The majority of the remaining Socialist troops hurried to those defenses, leaving the southeast, the actual target, almost entirely unguarded. General Victor himself led the charge that overwhelmed the southern defenses, and brought the attack into the city itself. The distraction had cost many lives, but they were primarily Trottle Soldiers, and the attack to the south was a success. The fighting then broke down into urban warfare, with Errikan Soldiers quickly taking hold of all of the town but the center, where some socialist forces held out until dawn, when they surrendered.

Rise of the Empire

Throughout the Civil War, General Christian Victor had made himself incredibly popular with the men in the army. He personally led most of the charges, always putting himself in the center of the action and the danger. He even went through the training with his men. It was his tactics that won the war very swiftly, and with very few casualties on his side, and he distributed the land confiscated from dead "traitors" and gave them to his soldiers. He was also highly outspoken in his political views: he was a die-hard nationalist, passionate defender of Christianity, and successful capitalist. All of these made him amazingly popular, and the public demanded him as Emperor of the new Errikan Empire. This went through, and General Victor became Emperor Christian I, the first monarch of the Errikan Empire.

Though he was meant to be an absolute monarch, Christian was highly distrustful of all government, and believed that an absolute monarchy could not work in the long run. Thus, he wrote the Imperial Constitution, which reinstated certain Republican ideals into the Empire.

Following this, the Empire began expansion in Mucro. The Tatter War and the War of Hammerpiece expanded Errikan territory in Mucro, and established the Errikan Empire as the dominant force in the region. The new territory provided needed room for the growing population to spread out, as well as amazing resources and trade contacts that made the Empire rich beyond her wildest dreams.

These wars brought about the alliance with the states of Jaymeland and Albu-querque, states to Errikland's west and southeast, respectively.

Colonies

The Empire has since sought foreign colonies, and has aquired onem which has actively expanded, in the land of Arterus. Following a brief period of rapid expansion, Errikan tactics of dealing with natives came under fire by other nations with holdings in Arterus, especially Jaredcohenia, but the Emperor handled the matter.[2]

After that matter was resolved, there was another period of expansion in Arterus. This was briefly interrupted with troubles with Kraven, but peace resumed soonafter and the Errikan population in Arterus exploded.

The accusations of human's rights abuses by the Errikan Government (and civilians) continue to be raised, especially by native's rights groups. Emperor Christian denys many of these accusations while defending others, saying that Errikland never signed anything relating to human's rights, and that those these so called abuses have been perpetrated upon are savages, not civilized people. Whatever is true, the native population in Errikan Arterus has fallen from over 20 million to several thousand.

Government

Constitutional Republican Monarchy

Emperor: Christian Michael Victor I

Senate Majority Leader: Robert Thachman, NCL

Major Political Parties: The National Christian Libertarian Party, the Labor Party, the Progressive Party, the Cheesemakers Union

The government is defined by the Imperial Constitution, which was written by the Emperor as his first and only act as supreme ruler. This divides the central government into two parts: the Imperium and the Senate. Imperium is the Emperor, who has full power over all military matters as well as treason. His approval is needed for any bill from the Senate is passed. The Senate is the legislature, and manages all matters of the government that do not have to do with the Military. Their powers are extremely limited by the Imperial Constitution, as it strictly restricts the role of the government in social matters. The Senate consists of two houses, the upper senate and the lower senate. The lower senate is elected based on population, whereas the upper senate has the same amount of representitives from each region. What little power the government holds socially is at the local level.

This limiting of government power has forced it to be very laissez-faire in its social policies.

Military

The the Imperial Military is the center of Errikland's government, consisting of three throughly integrated branches, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Air Force. The Army is the largest and best funded branch, being the center of the Errikan war effort.

At any one time, the Errikan military employs a little over 5% of the total Errikan population.

Army

The Faust Troopers make up the majority of the Errikan military. Very well trained and equiped, they are the "infantry of the line" for the Errikan army.

The Faust Commandos are the elite of the elite for Errikan forces. Their training is the most intense of all, and produces hard, skilled men.

The Trottle Soldiers are quite simply fodder. In Errikan society, when one is too physically and/or mentally inept to do anything else, this is one of the few jobs available to them. They are given limited training and equiped with second rate supplies; they are not expected to survive, just do some damage and be a target. The majority of them do not last very long; however, those that do quickly gain experience and become hardened veterens: it is their guidence that allows any Trottels to survive. This is the only branch of the Imperial Army that has reported desertion.

The army also has tanks, most notably the main battle tank called the Krokodil Panzers. Helicopters also have widespread use, and are often a large part of Errikan ground tactics.

Navy

Though it is not their top priority, the Errikans have a fairly strong navy. It is primarily centered around the few "uber battleships" and their support destroyers, along with powerful carriers and a well developed submarine fleet. The Faust Marines belong to this branch.

Some time ago, this branch had a "revamping," which provided it with much more power and funds. [3]

Air Force

Though it is not their top priority, the Errikans have a strong air force. Errikan tactics often call for "a good carpet bombing," thus leading to the large scale use of heavy bombers. The Faust Paratroopers are part of this branch.

Some time ago, this branch had a "revamping," which provided it with much more power and funds.

Diplomacy

The Errikan Empire is the founder of the Mucro Imperial Alliance, and a leading power in the land of Mucro. Also, it is a member of the Arterusian Mutual Aid Pact, and have alliances with various other nations.

"Errikan Diplomacy" is a common euphemism for when one uses particularly ruthless and devastating attacks or tactics, often with no qualms about destroying civilians, to achieve ends efficiently, usually while actual diplomacy would have solved the situation bloodlessly.

People and Culture

The Errikan people are known for being very conservative and nationalistic, almost to a xenophobic level, as well as being very loyal, hard working, and brave. The Errikan sense of honor drives most aspects of their culture. This honor ensures that an Errikan has a duty to his family and his country, but also to himself. It is the view that, by working hard and succeeding at an honest living, you are furthering your family and your country as well as your own interests. There is a certain Errikan devotion to capitalism, then, that exists in the honor of an Errikan. There is also a general belief in the idea that the success of the stong and the failure of the weak is best for the nation.

While Errikans feel a great devotion to their country, or "the Empire," they are incredibly suspicious of government. They are typically distrustful of many foreigners, until they get to know them, and look down upon many other cultures as "savage." While this would seem to make them less than agreeable to outsiders, most Errikans (especially women) take great steps to be gracious hosts to guests, and are very loyal to any friendships that they make. The most admired attribues of an Errikan are Bravery, Intelligence, Honesty, and Loyalty. Errikans as a rule tend to try to follow these traits. Men and women are defined to have very seperate roles with little to no mixing between them. However, both genders are highly repected for their work.

Much of the Errikan society is very family based. Women marry very young (most 19-24), and begin having children almost immediately. The average Errikan family has eight to twelve children, and the infant/youth mortality rate is very low. This, coupled with the long lifespans that are very common, leads to a swift population growth.

But one of the greatest influences on Errikan culture is Christianity. It manages to find its way into most aspects of Errikan life, and has over 90% of the nation identifying themselves as "devout Christians."

The greatest symbol of Errikan honor is the sword. As such, it is a huge honor in the army to be awarded a sword for valor.

It should be noted that the values expressed here, the system based on honor, are known as "conservative values" in Errikland, and were not as strong as they had been by the time of the civil war. However, Christian Victor stressed these values, and they found a revival after the civil war.

Homosexuality is not only exceedingly rare in Errikland, but is outlawed.
