Fbrenia is a smallish nation, covered almost in its entirety by thick forest, with a few low mountains poking out here and there from amidst the trees. Very little is known of it, as it has been without a government for over four decades, and travel to this nation is highly unadvisable. Bold visitors have reported that the cities and villages are slowly crumbling due to neglect, and that there is very little in the way of infrastructure or public services. There are no law-enforcement personnel. But then, there are no laws.

Most Fbreni art comes from those who have fled the country and established themselves elsewhere. There are a few interesting museums, reportedly suffering from dire neglect, and the capital, Gokota, which lies deep inside the jungle, was once a marvel of colonial architecture.

Warning

There are no specific indications that Fbrenia is unsafe for travellers, but Fbreni are not used to seeing tourists. There is no infrastructure for accommodating foreign guests; there are no functional hotels that are known of, no banks, and no foreign embassies. Be aware that there is no law enforcement, and that what few hospitals still operate undoubtedly suffer from under-qualified staff, poor infrastructure, and an extremely serious lack of medical equipment.

Many Indigenous Fbreni reportedly live in the wild, and little is known of their customs and ways of life. It is inadvisable to stray into their lands.

Facts for the Traveller

Visas

There are at present no authorities to deliver a visa. Fbrenia has no diplomatic representatives aboard; all Fbreni embassies and consulates were closed in 1964 when the government abandoned the country.

Technically, it is therefore possible just to walk in.

Money and Costs

There is no reliable information on this issue. The national currency before 1964 was the Fbreni peso, but it is unclear whether that currency is still in circulation, or what its value might be. Foreign cash or barter may be accepted in some parts of the country, by some people – most probably in the coastal city of Uket, if you can get there. There is no established economic system.

Attractions

Gokota

Once the capital, Gokota was founded as a small town by the colonial authorities in 1624. It was established fairly deep inside the jungle, far from the coast, to protect it from pirates and foreign colonial powers. By the eighteenth century, Gokota had become a flourishing colonial city, and something of an architectural wonder, with large, beautifully sculpted buildings.

When Fbrenia became independent in 1838, the House of Parliament was built, and soon recognised as one of the most beautiful examples of colonial architecture in the world. Reportedly, it still stands, although it is now empty and abandoned.

Other notable sights include Central Tower, which is topped with a clock on all four sides and rises high above the city, and a number of museums, include the National Centre of Modern Indigenous Art, and the Fbreni National Museum.

Uket

The only other city in the country, Uket is much smaller than the southern, inland capital. It is – or rather was – the nation’s main port (on the Atlantic Ocean), and once a brisk centre of commerce. It is somewhat more multicultural than the capital, too, since immigrants tended in general to arrive here and go no further. It even has a small Chinatown.

Uket remains the country’s sole, tenuous link to the outside world, as a few lonely ships do dock occasionally for a little commerce. They never stay long, and the crew rarely disembarks.

Uket is home to the National Maritime Museum, a vast building which was once one of the prides of the nation, and exhibits maritime fauna and flora, as well as genuine and reconstructed ships from Fbrenia’s history.

Lumyunla Falls

Lost somewhere in the jungle are the spectacular Lumyunla Falls, an oddity of nature which, in the middle of the twentieth century, was just beginning to draw tourists from around the world. They are formed by the river Loj spilling into a large, rather narrow crack in the forest ground, and rushing down several hundred metres into the cavern and underground lake far below. It used to be possible to make your way down into the cavern, but no foreign visitors have been to the Falls in several decades.

Getting there

Fbrenia borders several other nations, so you can enter by land if you really want to. To do so is a rather bizarre experience. The borders all lie in the depths of the forest. There are checkpoints on the foreign sides, but those on the Fbreni side are disused and abandoned. You will need to show your passport to leave whatever country you choose to cross over from, but there will be no-one asking to see it as you enter Fbrenia. The roads leading up to the borders in Fbrenia are in a grave state of disrepair. Reportedly, there is a single checkpoint still manned by a lone, elderly Fbreni guard, but if so he is acting from a forlorn sense of duty to a long-defunct State. . .

If you wish to enter by sea, you can likewise just sail, row or even swim your way to the coast without having to show a passport. A few, sporadic foreign commerce ships still dock in the coastal city of Uket, and if they let you hitch a ride you can disembark there.

Sawwesh International Airport, near Gokota, is abandoned, and its runways are in no fit state to be used. There are no flights into Fbrenia. Do not try to land there with a private jet.
