The Constitutional Monarchy of Gurenn is a large nation. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt, pro-business individuals devotes most of its attentions to Commerce, with areas such as Defence and Law & Order receiving almost no funds by comparison. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Information Technology, and Beef-Based Agriculture industries.

Crime is a major problem, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Gurenn's national animal is the Gurennese dragon, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the yami.

Government and politics

Main article(s): Politics of Gurenn

Gurenn is a constitutional monarchy with the power of the Emperor only being limited by the constitution. The current Emperor, Giovanni Nnelg, is a benevolent dictator. There is a Diet, whose task is to make proposals about issues. They were all chosen by the Emperor. The Emperor has the final word about all decisions. There are hardly any elections and political freedoms are rare. But civil rights in Gurenn are superb.

Foreign relations and military

Gurenn is a member of the United Nations since 1956. As the founder of Ania, Gurenn maintains close economic relations with Deffice, Demontropius and Luxias. However, no money is put in defence. Gurenn contains an army of samurai, battling without firearms because those are regarded as dishonorable. A large amount of those samurai are dhampirs, created by interbreeding between Men and vampires. There are several Gurennese dragons trained for battle. They only succumb to the will of the Emperor and as such prove to be powerful battle powers.

Demographics

Gurenn's population is estimated at around 30 million. For the most part, Gurennese society is linguistically and culturally homogeneous with small populations of foreign workers, Gurennese Luxians, Gurennese Defficese, Gurennese Demontropians and others. Gurenn also has indigenous minority groups such as the Dochaku and Nanshimans.

Gurennese population is quickly growing, with about 3 million new people every day.

Around 84% of Gurennese people profess to believe Aniatism. Shinto, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism have significantly influenced Gurennese beliefs and mythology. Religion in Gurenn tends to be syncretic in nature, and this results in a variety of practices, such as parents and children celebrating Aniatism rituals, students praying before exams, couples holding a wedding at a Christian church and funerals being held at Aniatist temples. A minority (0.7%) profess to Christianity. In addition, since the mid-19th century, numerous religious sects have emerged in Gurenn.

About 99% of the population speaks Gurennese as their first language. It is an agglutinative language distinguished by a system of honorifics reflecting the hierarchical nature of Gurennese society, with verb forms and particular vocabulary which indicate the relative status of speaker and listener. Gurennese has borrowed or derived large amounts of vocabulary from Japanese, Korean, Chinese and, since the immigration of Demontropians, Latin. The writing system uses kanji and two sets of kana, as well as the Roman alphabet and Arabic numerals. The Dochaku language is moribund, with only a few elderly native speakers remaining on the islands. Most public and private schools require students to take courses in both Gurennese and English.

Education and health

Primary, secondary schools and universities were introduced into Gurenn in 1850. Since 1950, compulsory education in Japan consists of elementary school and middle school, which lasts for nine years (from age 6 to age 15). Almost all children continue their education at a three-year senior high school, and most high school graduates attend a university, junior college, trade school, or other post-secondary institution. Gurenn's education is very competitive, especially for entrance to institutions of higher education. The two top-ranking universities in Gurenn are the University of Saikyo and Nankyo University.
