Niogoul-Maeromirpli is a nation in the Shadowstorm Imperium Ruins.

Geography

Niogoul-Maeromirpli is a rather barren world, due to having less water and sunlight than a typical inhabited world. Most cities are built about half way between the poles and the equator. The capital city is the aptly named "Underground City".

History

Before the coming of the YlimNeicna

The world of Niogoul-Maeromirpli was sparsely populated by a few primitive civilisations, made up of the native sentient species, collectively referred to as the Niogoul-Maeromirplin. There is no recorded history from this time.

The rule of AdlavTsedur YlimNeicna

In the year 193,856 ASI, a young Velfodnerset male called AdlavTsedur YlimNeicna invaded and conquered the world of Niogoul-Maeromirpli, becoming its king. His rule consisted almost entirely of forcing the natives to give him "taxes" - those being anything valuable they owned.

He failed to make anything great of his kingdom, due to a combination of incompetence and laziness.

In 199,040 ASI, AdlavTsedur was challenged for the throne by his son Dorusceronis, who had enlisted the aid of Atanracnad, AdlavTsedur's other son, as well as the native Niogoul-Maeromirplin and some off-world soldiers keen to be part of Dorusceronis' new kingdom.

AdlavTsedur refused to give up the throne, and died fighting.

The rule of Dorusceronis YlimNeicna

After seizing the throne of Niogoul-Maeromirpli, Dorusceronis ordered the construction of an underground fortress, in which to have his palace. This fortress was continually expanded, becoming Niogoul-Maeromirpli's capital, "The Underground City".

Although Dorusceronis takes the title of King, in reality his power is shared more or less equally with his brother Atanracnad. Under Dorusceronis' rule, Niogoul-Maeromirpli is somewhat a meritocracy. Under him are the Death Knights - a group of undead warrior necromancers who helped Dorusceronis to seize the throne.

Dorusceronis placed almost no regulations on business, in order to encourage off-worlders to bring their commerce to Niogoul-Maeromirpli. This was a great success, and Niogoul-Maeromirpli's economy has flourished since. What taxes Dorusceronis does collect are used to fund the world's formidable military forces.

In 201,942 ASI, the army of Luceterna was able to teleport into The Underground City, the anti-teleportation barrier having being dispelled by the power of Degriesk Lemaliorn. Having the element of surprise, the invasion attempt was initially very successful, however, after the death of Lemaliorn and the subsequence escape of the Luceternan leader, the occupiers were soon defeated.

Government

The Royalty

The royalty currently consists of just the king and his brother. Although the king ranks higher officially, their power is about equal in reality. In this way, the government is aristocratic, but in selecting subordinates to delegate power to, it is more meritocratic. Due to the nation's pro-market politics, residents can also gain power through business savvy.

The Death Knights

The Death Knights are the most fearsome subset of the Niogoul-Maeromirplin military. To become a Death Knight, a soldier must be a necromancer who is also skilled at physical combat. Very few necromancers are accepted into the Death Knights.

Initiation

When a necromancer is found worthy of entry into the Death Knights, an initiation must be performed. This consists of the necromancer unsheathing his dagger, whereupon an experienced Death Knight will cast a spell on the dagger. The necromancer must then plunge the dagger into his or her own chest. Rather than dying, the necromancer will become undead. Unlike most undead, they will retain their selfhood rather than becoming a mindless slave.

Foundation

In 199,038 ASI, Atanracnad YlimNeicna found his way to the primitive, human-inhabited world of Monserk. He was recruiting for the army with which he and his brother would overthrow their father, the king of Niogoul-Maeromirpli. During his search, he discovered a group of necromantic warriors led by Thintaedkran Anrusnya. The warriors agreed to help the YlimNeicna brother, in return for positions of power in the new kingdom.

After the successful battle against AdlavTsedur, the warriors were given their promised positions - as the Death Knights of Niogoul-Maeromirpli. Since then, they have become known as the Elder Death Knights to distinguish them from the newer Death Knights who were recruited after the revolution.
