History

In prehistoric times, a complex mix of peoples moved into the island, Asiatic, Baltic, and Germanic in nature (though these can be exhaustingly broken down into smaller sub-groups). As writing came into use, eight distinct kingdoms can be found emerging on the Liangite island. Referred to for simplicity by their cardinal directions, the Eight Kingdoms period continued into the turn of the century, when the advent of a powerful confederation of Turco-Mongol warriors known as the Roshun, led by an ancient black wyrm, descended upon the kingdom of Northwestern Liang, led, as always, by the lord Dao Yorinaga. Seven years of warfare ensued, in which the vastly inferior Northwestern troops used wile, cunning, and strategem aplenty to constantly frustrate the horsemen of the Roshun. After Yorinaga continued to frustrate the dragon's efforts, a compromise was reached: The two nations would be merged, taking the title of the ancient kingdom. With its newfound strength, the Northwestern troops embarked on a unification campaign.

Enter the dwarves. Under the young dwarf-lord Vali I, a group of them believed to comprise volunteers from the dwarf-realms of Aglarond, the Iron Hills, and the Lonely Mountain boarded a somewhat flimsy fleet and sailed off into the ever-changing world. Although the records of the dwarves' trip is lost, the Mazarbul Liang (Khuzdul for "Records of Liang") tells of the dwarven encounter with Sun Xuande of Southern Liang, and to have bested him in battle several times. Southern Liangite records do not tell of this period, for writing had not yet been formulated amoung the Liangjin (men of Liang). Whatever may be the case, Dao Yorinaga's all-conquering expedition, after the defeat of a broad coalition of the other kingdoms, came upon the fortress of Barak-dûm, and the first of seven wars between Liangjin and Khazad began.

The tale of Liang's history takes on a monotonous tone hereon out, with the largely isolated realm enjoying periodic times of peace between the two races followed by hugely destructive war, until sometime after A.D. 1700 the dwarves agreed to nevermore war with the Liangjin, and the feudalistic kingdoms arranged for the dwarf-lord to accept Yorinaga as his suzerain.

Centuries later, Northwestern Liang came out of isolation, destroying a nearby imperialistic empire known as Magdha and taking it as a fief of the High Admiral Vytautas Karyu. Soon after, entirely of its own initiative, the Domain entered upon a period of prolonged interstellar ship-building, marked by the efforts at colonization by the dwarven element. The first one, Barazûn, grew up after a series of events culminating in what Allaneans refer to as the One Day War. The second one was established at Azangathol in a militarized fashion.
