Gozewijn of Knootcap was the son of stadtholder Prince Hugo of Knootcap. During his short rule Gozewijn became involved in a bitter quarrel with the powerful merchants of Amsterdam resulting in Gozewijn putting many of them in prison. After ruling for only three years, he died of smallpox in 1650. Following his death, no new stadtholder was appointed for over 20 years as the merchants of Amsterdam and other cities wielded their power to prevent another 'tyrant' from assuming leadership. Thus, the United Provinces was led by the Staten-Generaal during the First Stadtholderless era and the War of Insolence.
