Raghad Nazmareh (Persian: رغاد نازمرا), born 19 October 1948, in Al-Qamar, Kahanistan, is a Kahanistanian admiral and politician. Since 2005 she has served as the Commander of Naval Operations, and in 2006, ran for President as a conservative. She is deeply religious and unlike many Kahanistanian military leaders, she is diplomatic, preferring to avoid a fight if possible.

Early life

Nazmareh was born to a poor ethnic Persian immigrant family who was fleeing political repression. She is the younger of two children; her older brother Mahmoud (born 1942) converted from Zoroastrianism to Islam when Raghad was eleven and is now an ayatollah in Al-Bahr. Despite their poverty, they valued education greatly and taught their children to read Middle Eastern literature, including the works of Omar Khayyam as well as the Quran in its original Arabic and old Latin classics. One text that interested her greatly was the story of Sindbad the Sailor. She would often spend hours a day reading about ships at sea.

Military training

At age thirteen, in the 1962-63 school year, Nazmareh joined the Republic Naval Academy in Al-Bahr, Kahanistan. For her first year, she did not fare well under the harsh discipline (in the 1960's, students were often beaten for minor infractions with a thorn switch) and pushed back by slashing the tires of the Academy President's car. However, in the middle of her second year, living day by day with the threat of an expulsion if caught committing even a minor offense, she improved her conduct with the authorities. By the end of her second year her GPA had improved a full point from what it was at the end of her first year.

The rest of her career at the military academy was relatively uneventful, until tragedy struck. In her eighth year, however, she went on a flight exercise, piloting a MiG-21. Eager to prove herself, she took off and charged head-on into the opposing formation. The resulting collision sheared the wing of Nazmareh's MiG, but the opposing wing commander's fuel tank was broken and he was killed. Nazmareh was cleared of any wrongdoing (an investigation found that the fuel tank was old and needed to be replaced, and Nazmareh's enthusiasm and failure to avoid the wing collision would have merely crashed both into the ocean had the fuel tank not been substandard.) However, she was so depressed over the matter that she could not attend her graduation, her commission arrived in the mail in the form of a naval officer's uniform, rank insignia, and military papers.

Military career

Nazmareh's time as a junior officer consisted mainly of logistical matters. This career so bored her that she went to school simply to alleviate her boredom; she had to supply bases of friendly nations so many times she openly wondered what the point was in it without wars. However, in 1977, around the time she finished her M.A. degree, she was advanced to the rank of lieutenant commander and placed in command of the Kashin-class destroyer RKS Upton and sent to raid pirate vessels.

The new command improved her morale, and she performed very well against the pirates. Within a year piracy and terrorism in Kahanistanian waters was almost nonexistent. She was promoted to full commander after that crisis ended in 1978. Seeing the need for the ability to discuss matters when trying to get information from pirates, she pursued a Ph.D. in mass communication through correspondence courses at Kahanistan National University, which she completed in 1987.

The General Staff

In 1990, Nazmareh was promoted to the rank of Commodore, the lowest rank that allowed her to command more than her own ship. Her rank also admitted her to the General Staff of the Republic Navy.

Her first assignment as a flotilla commander was to patrol coastal waters of some small states that lacked their own navies. During some of these missions, she would sometimes "go native", going ashore to gather intelligence. Many of her officers followed suit, and Military Intelligence discovered numerous new pirate bases, forty between 1991 and 1997. Vice Admiral Nazmareh was given command of the carrier battle groups sent to wipe them out once and for all.

Rise to Power

Nazmareh often locked horns with Abdul-Rahman bin Muhammad, the powerful commander of the entire Republic Navy. She often agitated for peaceable negotiations, whereas Admiral Bin Muhammad advocated quick military strikes before enemy dictatorships could turn the propaganda war against them and often get away with more killings and atrocities.

During the invasion of Jenrak for destroying the city of Delisk for a gold mine, Defense Minister Abu Sultan bin Hamed al-Qahiri, commanding a massive invasion fleet, vanished in battle. With the succession of Admiral Bin Muhammad to the Defense Ministry, Nazmareh took over the command of the Navy, but was still subordinated in most respects by the new Defense Minister. The fact that some held that he had murdered General Abu Hamza al-Aziz, who had launched nuclear devices against Shazbotdom, to forestall a Shazbot invasion did not help Nazmareh's hostility toward him.

Later, in the Freekish invasion, Bin Muhammad, commander of the defending fleets, vanished in battle. He is believed to have either killed himself to avoid Puritania, or been captured after his command battleship was sunk.

Nazmareh took command of the remainder of the fleet, and ordered the surviving ships to beach themselves and use themselves as coastal artillery and fortresses. However, when the land war began in earnest, as an admiral without a fleet and disillusioned with General Abdullah Hassan al-Ghazi's method of handling the war, she was one of the first main commanders to flee, and spent much of the war in Amestria.

Commander of the Navy and Presidential candidacy

After the end of the Freekish war, Kahanistan rapidly replaced and improved its fleet. Fleet Admiral Nazmareh, now the official commander of the Republic Navy, assumed command of a heavy command battleship, an H-44 imported from Xirnium. At this time, the 2006 Presidential elections were about to be held, and MassPwnage began an invasion of Kahanistan, in retaliation for Kahanistan's declaration of war against Doomingsland for gassing Velkyan soldiers, Kahanistan's allies.

Nazmareh had been asked by the Conservative Party of Kahanistan to run for President. Fearing that the religious vote would swing the election in favor of General al-Ghazi, as opposed to Margaret Delray or Marcellus Valens, she accepted, coming in second in the polls despite her religious conservatism.

During the Pwnage conflict, Admiral Nazmareh was badly wounded when her command ship was destroyed while she was attempting to negotiate with MassPwnage. She currently has minimal use of her right arm as a result of her injuries; her shoulder is almost immobile, pierced by shrapnel in the explosion.

Nazmareh later involved herself in discussions with Southeast Asian, Isselmere-Nielander, Yallakian, and other commanders to improve the state of the Republic Navy. She has also responded to Amestrian war crimes by explicitly ordering her troops not to commit war crimes when stationed abroad.

Personal life

Nazmareh is divorced and has one son, Behzad (born 1990). He is currently enrolled in the Republic Guard military training academy.
