Geography

Saint Lazare boasts a mild Mediterranean climate, with a rocky background and grand beaches. In part, the rocky terrain helps to forgo any serious expansion of the Saint Lazare city, but construction of the new International Island is hoping to add some needed space for new facilities and buildings, including Saint Lazare's ow international airport. Much of the new International Island is devoted to international diplomacy and business, although new apartments and local businesses are also hoping to flourish there as well.

History

Saint Lazare's history ranges from its creation in the 13th century by the Grimaldi clan, to the reign of two different regimes, to its present-day independent state. For most of its history, Saint Lazare was called Monaco, principally because the former citadel overlooking the sea was called the Rock of Monaco. Other possible sources include an ancient Greek temple, named Monoikos (Greek Μόνοικος), built by Phoecian colonists.

Early history (1297 - 1814)

Monaco began its rise to statehood with the capture of the Monaco fortress in 1297, by François Grimaldi. Under of being a Fransican monk [which is monaco in Italian], Grimaldi and his followers seized the fortress in the name of the Pope. For the centuries after the incident, the Grimaldi family owned and controlled the territories around the Rock of Monaco. Its strategic position in the Mediterranean proved lucrative to other European powers, with the French frequently proclaiming Monaco's independence for over three centuries. In 1524, King Felipe II of Spain claimed a protectorate status over Monaco. In 1614, Honoré II declared the Principate of Monaco and adopted the title: Prince of Monaco. Thirty years later, in 1641, France forced the Principate to drop its claim to the Spanish protectorate in the Treaty of Péronne, in exchange for becoming a French protectorate, allowing Monaco to retain its rights and privileges under the French crown.

Following the death of Prince Honoré II in 1662, Prince Louis I married into the Bourbon House of France and was likewise granted several privileges, among these the Embassy of France to the Holy See, new fortifications around the Principate, and renovations to the Palace. These privileges existed up until 1793, after the French Republic proclaimed the dissolution of the Principate, placing several of the Grimadli family under arrest. The persecution of the royal family continued until after 1814, when the Bourbon monarchy reinstated the Grimaldi family to their claims.

To the Modern Age (1815 - 1945)

Under the Treaty of Paris of 1815, Monaco was vested under the protection of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1817, the Treaty of Stupiniggi confirmed the Sardinian protectorate. During 1848 revolutions, Monaco suffered a severe blow to its national integrity, when the towns of Menton and Roquebrune declared their independence. The Prince of Monaco only loosely maintained control over the two cities, only to surrender them to France in 1861, with the Franco-Monegasque Treaty, which also guaranteed Monaco's independence under the French Emperor [then Napoleon III]. In 1863, the Seabath Company (Société des Bains de Mer) was founded, tasked with the renovation of the Les Spelugues, which later became Monte Carlo [after Prince Charles III]. The Seabath Company performed a massive rejuvenation for Monaco, building the world famous Gran Casino and numerous hotels, including the Hôtel de Paris. In 1911, Prince Albert I instituted the first constitution of Monaco. In 1922, Prince Albert I died, leaving the Principate to his son, Louis II, who was also a general in the French Army. After the catastrophic War in 1940, Monaco was forced to surrender to the Germans. Following the war in 1945, Monaco fell under the jurisdiction of Cotland, a Norwegian Empire.

Cotland and Huahin (1945 - 2006)

Under Cotland, Monaco continued to serve a lucrative base for tourism and gambling. Despite this wonderful trade bonus, Monaco was indefensible for the Empire, so Cotland sold the Principate to Huahin. Under Huahin's management, Monaco continued its growth. However, it was not long after this incident that Huahin began to collapse under internal pressure, principally because factions in the military were forcing the Huahin government into intangling conditions that unsustainable. It was therefore decided to grant autonomy to Monaco. The Huahin government installed Albert Roumillet, a descendent of the Grimaldi family, three generations disconnected. They then established the Grand Duchy, just days before the Huahin government collapsed, leaving the state to fend on its own.

The Grand Duchy (2006 - )

Despite the loss of its former parent nation, the Grand Duchy continued to progress. Grand Duke Albert Roumillet authorized the construction of the International Island soon after succeeding the Principate. He also began to modernize the economy, permitting the establishment of the Bank of Saint Lazare. In another act, he offically changed the name of the Monaco main city to Saint Lazare, in honor of his patron saint - which is where the name of the Grand Duchy is derived likewise. Soon following the establishment of basic ministries and the military, Grand Duke Roumillet authorized the Saint Lazare national football team, which competed recently in the 2006 World Cup in the United States of Brink. Although the team failed to progress into the second round, the national pride emulated in its wake has helped unify and establish the Grand Duchy as a forward player in the international stage, football and otherwise.
