The Nation
The Former Texian Republic of Metropolitan Houston is a massive, devout nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate population of 2.505 billion are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of the Environment, Education, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.
Trespassers often find themselves impaled by crossbow bolts, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, military spending is on the increase, and crowds of flag-burning protesters tend to accidentally become crowds of burning protesters. Crime is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Metropolitan Houston's national animal is the raven, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Texian dollar(TXD).
Early History
The area now known as Metropolitan Houston was originally settled in 1839 by the followers of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the 2nd president of the Republic of Texas, who envisioned a Republic of Texas that would eventually rival the United States for control of North America. These colonists sought to take that vision a step further, and establish the republic as a global power through the establishment of a colony in the Simtropolis region. However, the Republic of Texas ceased to exist upon admission into the United States as the 28th state. The United States, who objected to the thought of becoming an empire, refused to take control over the colony, and as a result, the Republic of Houston was declared. This republic was short-lived, as Houston entered a period of imerial occupation lasting more than 40 years, first by the United Kingdom, the by the Empire of Brechenlass.
Mid-Simtropolis War

In the mid 1800s, Brechenlass took much of Metropolitan Houston and the Burgundy islands from the British. In 1890, a revolt broke out in nearby Giotizia, then a Dutch colony. Inspired by their actions, the Houstonians, tired of the oppressive rule under Brechenlass, also went into revolt, seeking their own independence. The British took this opportunity to try to re-establish their control over the Republic of Houston. However, the locals wanted sovereignty, and a three-sided conflict broke out as a result, with control of Houston up for grabs.
With the British distracted by the defection of Kedalfax to the revolutionary cause, in 1891, Houston was able to launch a surprise offensive and turn the tide in the Houstonian theater of the war. By the end of 1892, Houston had reclaimed all of their mainland possessions, concluding with the hard-fought Battle of the Delta, on Christmas Day. On June 3, 1893, naval forces from Houston, Kedalfax, and Giotizia laid siege to the American-controlled Maverick Island, one of the last imperial strongholds in the southern Gulf of Simtropolis. After several rounds of heavy fighting, imperial forces on the island surrendered to the Houstonian Navy on June 17th. This day is now known as V-G Day. The territory of Maverick Island was established later that day from the conquered island.
Houston as a Regional Power
With the near-complete removal of the imperial nations at the end of the Mid-Simtropolis War (the British still maintained a Crown Colony in eastern Simtropolis), there was a power void in the region, and Houston sought to establish itself as the dominant nation on the Gulf. With its prime location near the center of the Gulf and the acquisition of Maverick Island during the war, Houston was in the perfect place to become a major trading hub for the region. This goal was further enhanced when Houston was granted dominion over the northern Canal Zone in 1906. In 1940, the discovery on the shores of Lake Auton in southern Houston led to a commercial boom in the Ciudades del Cielo, which became a major trading hub between Houston and Audland. A port was established near the city on a branch of the Rio Seguín, linking that city to the Gulf of Simtropolis, further cementing Houston's reputation as a strong trading nation.
Civil Unrest in the West
Ever since the creation of the second republic, the western states in Houston have had little respect for the national government, often citing lack of representation as the main reason for revolt. These feelings eventually led to the Houstonian Civil War (1910-5), which ended with an uneasy truce. This truce lasted for more than a century, until the threat of revolt finally forced change within the nation. In late 2006, the nation as a whole was reorganized, changed its name to Metropolitan Houston, and declared an autonomous region in the western states.
Commonwealth of Maverick Island
In early 2007, the Houstonian Congress voted to elevate the status of Maverick Island from territory to that of a semi-autonomous commonwealth, with the idea that they would eventually choose to become either and independent nation, or choose full statehood within the republic. However, shortly after its creation, the commonwealth was struck with a humanitarian crisis, as refugees began fleeing by the thousands to the north side of the island from neighboring Giotizia, which was quickly disappearing into the sea. The Maverick Legislature, in light of these events, petitioned the federal government to dissolve the commonwealth in favor of the creation of two states: Maverick Island, and New Giotizia, that latter being a full Houstonian state created for the Giotizian people to replace the nation they had just lost.
