Present Information

The Exalted Empire of Qordalis is currently currently run by a Empress Dejan Qordath, her consort Zenobia, and First Chengar Qordath. A twenty member council, of which Chengar is the head, also approves all major decisions.

Qordalis is currently preparing to face the onslaught of a major invasion from it's long-standing rival Nurcia

History

Qordalis was originally a liberal democracy, but increasing corruption and corporate abuses eventually spawned the Qordalis rebellion. Though begun by Chengar Qordath the rebellion was at first little more than a terrorist movement. When the highly charismatic Dejan Qordath joined the movement and began working to build up public support it soon developed into a full-fledged rebellion that saw the government overthrown. With the rebellion's success Dejan retired from public life, while Chengar Qordath assumed the title First of the Qordathi, with 19 other members making up the Council of Qordalis.

For a time after the rebellion Qordalis remained relatively insular, mostly due to worries that foreign nations might seek to restore democracy and the old regime. However, after a few years the Qordathi became relatively confident that the other nations of Paradoxia had accepted their legitimacy, and in a surprising move proposed the creation of the Paradoxian Treaty Organization.

However, Qordathic leadership in the PTO made them a target for the expansionist state of Nurcia. Nurcia first attempted to provoke a coup in Qordalis that would bring a puppet government into power, but the main result of this was to bring Dejan Qordath out of retirement and into the position of Empress of Qordalis, though at the time the position was largely ceremonial.

Open warfare then broke out between the two nations, and Nurcia launched a major invasion of Qordalis. However the Nurcian invasion force encountered difficulty when their supply lines were cut by the Inkfishinch navy. At the battle of Telden Field the Nurcian army was annihilated, and shortly afterward the First's Elohandre (and if rumor is to be believed the First himself) assassinated the Nurcian leader Keldon Nurcin, although it is speculated that the method of assisination was not by a concealed weapon but instead by poison, which detractors claim has been covered up to prevent besmirching the First.

Shortly after the war a new constitution was put into place that shifted official executive power to a triad made up of First Chengar Qordath, Empress Dejan Qordath, and Empress Consort Zenobia.

With the Nurcian threat quelled, Qordalis began offering major aid to Corvos in their war with Deianira. Once the war ended and civil war broke out in Corvos the Qordathic volunteers under Pheonix Syl'variel actually took over administration of a large part of Corvos, as they did not wish to favor any particular faction by handing over the lands they had liberated from Deianira. Once Paulus Dimwit had established himself relatively well and the Qordathi had concluded he was preferable to the Wathorn governemt the region was given over to him, and soon Paulus began to receive increasing amounts of aid from the Qordathic government. The budding romance between Pheonix Syl'variel and Paulus has only served to further cement the alliance between the two nations.

Characteristics

The population of Qordalis is very mixed, as many emigrants are attracted to Qordalis' excellent civil rights, low crime rate, strong economy, and generous social welfare programs. Despite the fact that Qordathic is the official language of the nation most of the populace uses English in everyday life, and approximately 10% of the population is not fluent in Qordathic.

Qordathic citizens tend to be courteous and helpful, but often tend to seem a bit stiff and formal at first. However, once trust is established they tend to form very deep friendships. Qordathic culture tends to highly emphasize concepts like honesty and honor, and Qordathic society tends to be fairly tolerant of differneces.

Qordalis has an excellent environmental and human rights record, though the non-democratic government costs them some credit on human rights.

Economy

Organizations

Qordalis is notable for many of the rather unusual organizations that hold important roles in the government, and it is only prudent to spend some time explaining these.

Qordathi: The Qordathi are the official ruling class of Qordalis. Membership includes the twenty members of the Council of Qordalis, and the Empress. Every Qordathi abandons their original family name and replaces it with Qordath, and most also abandon their given names when they join. The Qordathi are ranked according to seniority, with the longest serving Qordathi holding the title of First. Each Qordathi appoints their successor upon retirement.

Elohandre: The Elohandre are the official servants of the Qordathi. Each Elohande is sworn into the service of a single Qordath, and they fulfill a wide variety of roles. Generally the role filled by an Elohande is determined by the duties of the Qordath they serve, but all Elohandre are trained extensively in combat and expected to serve as bodyguards to their Qordath along with any other roles they are assigned. The head of each group of Elohandre is the Elohandek, who serves as the chief advisor of the Qordath.

Pheonixes: The elite of the Qordathic military, Pheonixes are trained nearly from birth and are said to be unparalelled warriors. The highly trained and well equipped Kinghts of Qordalis who serve as the bulk of the army have always boasted that one of them can match ten soldiers of a foreign army (a boast they proved in the Nurcian invasion). The Pheonixes claim the ability to match the Knights at a ten to one ratio.

Climate

Qordalis enjoys a relatively temperate climate, though areas farther away from the large inland lake Voula Ela'ha tend to be a bit on the dry side.

Influences of the First on Philosophy

A student of the first was walking through a garden with the first. "Teacher, what is truth?" The student asked. The teacher thought about this carefully for a moment and replied, "Honor". The student then asked, "But Teacher, what is honor?" The teacher thought about this too carefully, and replied "Wisdom". Finally the student asked, "But what is wisdom, Teacher?" And the First smiled and said, "Truth." And the student was enlightened.
