The firestone APS is a add on system that protects against missiles with out having to add a more expensive, heavier, and ammo wasteful CWIS or redesigning the said vehicle to protect against more threats.
Design
The need for a cheep, effective protection against missiles equipped with tandem heat charges quickly became apperant with the kill rate of a TOW missile.
It uses a 24.6 Doppler radar. and can engage target up to 100 metres away. Before doing this however it gives a loud warning, unless the warning is disabled by the tank commander. Its fires (optimal firing range is 50m) a 110 fragmentation shell. This shell will detonate above the missile and shower it with shrapnel. This in effect will destroy the incoming missile. The APS can destroy almost any guided or unguided anti tank missile.
