The Baaj is the Parliament of Cikoutimi, located in Ceboné. It's the name both for the Parliament and the building it is located in.

As the seat of the legislative branch of Cikoutimi, it houses both the Upper House (Goulaq Baaj) and the Lower House (Riq Baaj).

Name

Baaj is a derived from ibaa jahilu, Alimi for "house of assembly". The Chicoutim name has been taken into most other languages.

History

Building

The New Baaj was built from 1972-1973 and replaced the Old Baaj which was declared decrepit in 1968 and thus unfit for housing the regional parliament.

The New Baaj was designed by famous Cikoutimian architect Jaun-Mari Pinitère, but came under heavy criticism because many Cikoutimians wanted a parliament in traditional Marani style instead of a modern building.

The Old Baaj was restored in the 1980s and now serves as the National Cikoutimian Museum.
