Catalatina (officially named the People's Republic of Catalatina) is a small, landlocked socialist republic located east of Marquish and north of Stalinikov. It became a socialist state on September 12th, 1959, following the seizure of power by a Marxist guerilla force called Libertad. The seizure of power was the climax to a decade-long civil war which consisted of the Libertad guerillas cutting off communications and supply lines and launching surprise attacks, as well as on a smaller scale, labourers and peasants revolting against their bosses and landlords.

History

Pre-Colonization

Prior to the colonization of Catalatina, it was home to a large race of indigenous peoples called the Laiqi. The Laiqi were a remarkably advanced society, with developed heirarchies and technologies. When the colonists came from overseas, they were generally met peacefully by the natives. However, things soon turned sour between the two societies. The colonists sought to conquer the native land and claim it as property of the monarchy. The natives wished to keep their culture in tact. The result was a bloodbath. The colonists had guns, and the native resistance was no match. The entire race of the Laiqi were decimated, leaving very few survivors. Their culture and language of Laiquia, however, have lived on through society.

The Fight for Independence

In the mid-19th century, the descendants of the colonists in the nation-state now called the Dominion of Tropica were growing restless. Countless errors and increasing neglect from the crown of their mother state were growing, and the citizens of this new state felt they had little to no social ties left with their old masters. In 1879, the government of the Dominion of Tropica announced that they would become an independent state. Obviously, the crown did not take the news too well, and a war for independence ensued. The nationalists came out on top after 3 years of bloody war, and the nation was re-named the Domain of Tropica. It adopted its own currency of the sovi, and created its own constitution. It eventually re-formed its relationship with its old mother nation, still a strong state in the world spectrum, but this relationship was only to be smashed when socialist dissidents took over the government from the military dictatorship in 1959.

Civil War & Social Revolution

In the early 20th century, Catalina (then referred to as The Domain of Tropica) was very unlike most other nations in the Alliance of Socialist States. In fact, at the time, though Tropica was located in the dead center of the AOSS region, it was not a part of the alliance itself and was constantly in a bitter cold war with the left-wing nations of the AOSS. The nation was allied with strong imperialist powers in other regions, and had strong trade bonds with the nations as well as with the corporate monopolies that made their homes in such countries. When many of the allies went to war against a common enemy in 1948, the Domain of Tropica also went to war. The ensuing conscription caused a lot of unrest among the population, and they sought to find a new political group to put their faith into. They found this in the party of young radicals called Libertad. The party of socialists and communists, who saw an opportunity for revolution in the current condition of the state and its people, began to organize a guerilla strike force throughout the entire nation. Hundreds of terrorist attacks against the Tropican right-wing government and demands to pull out of the war eventually pulled all of the internationally stationed troops back to the nation. With the army back home, and with the guerilla army operating an offensive against the government, the nation was plunged into a civil war that would last ten years.

September 12, 1959 was a day that is now commonly referred to as "Krata Day." The name refers to the capturing of the Tropican's government control centre, called "Kratam", by the Libertad guerilla forces. The leaders of the five cells that took Kratam (Armando Bustos, Edward Pinsley, Michael Nikel, Amanda Whitfield and Joseph Storm) are today regarded as national heroes, and they are buried in massive mausoleums surrounding the new house of parliament in Catalatina.

Since Krata Day and the seizure of state in 1959, the now renamed People's Republic of Catalatina has cut off all trade relations with capitalist nations and instead operates in the Alliance of Socialist States, a large trade and political alliance between several left-wing nations in the same area. This transition was vastly helped along by the new Prime Minister of Catalatina, Edward Pinsley.

Geography

Catalatina is a very diverse nation as far as terrain goes. Unlike many of its neighbour nations, it has no outlet to the ocean. However, it is filled with many great lakes and rivers. Some of the habitats that can be found in Catalatina include mountainous terrain, foothills, grassy plains, lakes and beaches and coniferous forest. To the west of Catalatina lies the nation of Marquish, and to the south, Stalinikov. The larger of Catalatina's cities and towns are generally located nearer to the center of the nation's area.

Culture

Foods

Catalatina is known world-wide for its exotic foods, which are for the most part from the Laiqi society. Laiqi cooking uses a wide variety of spices and herbs, which, fans of the famous food style say, add zest and flavour to any edible concoction. Crops used in many of the meals include rice and other grains, corn, etc. The Laiqi society used sheep as the primary meat in their cooking, and it shows in many modern Catalatine delicacies.
