Clayquot is the largest city and provincial capital of Etnier. With a population of 5,175,163 (2005 est.) it is the focus of Kelssek's 8th-largest metropolitan area with a population of 11.9 million (2004 census).
Clayquot is located in northern Kelssek at a confluence where the Lean merges with the Kewatin river, facilitating its early role as a trading post with goods being transported by river. It experiences a continental climate with generally very sunny weather, but also extreme temperatures; the city experiences very cold winters and hot summers. The city is important as a major transportation hub and the transshipment point for almost half of Kelssek's agricultural production. It is also a manufacturing centre and the corporate headquarters of the Channel Twelve and Worldnet media conglomerates. The city is home to the Kelssekian Centre for Human and Animal Health, a world-class research facility equipped with a Biosafety Level 4 lab able to handle deadly and communicable diseases such as the Ebola virus, the anchor of a fast-growing biotechnology industry. The National Kelssekian Mint, which produces all of Kelssek's circulation coins, is also located in Clayquot.
The city is famed as the home of Kelssek's largest fringe festival, the Clayquot Fringe. It is also the home of the famous Clayquot Art Gallery and the National Museum of Nature. Clayquot boasts a thriving independent film community, and is also historically a centre for folk and jazz music. Several popular punk and progressive-rock bands also originated from Clayquot, including The Jinx, The Fire Doors, and Ace Menace.
Education
Clayquot is home to two major universities:
- University of Etnier (U of E) - a leading research university in medical and earth sciences.
- Clayquot School of Economics (CSE) - reputed as a centre of left-wing economic thought and often nicknamed the "Commie School of Economics", its history and sociology degrees are also very well-regarded.
Transportation
A characteristic of Clayquot is its very wide streets which usually have their centre lanes reserved for buses. Mass transit in Clayquot is highly developed and is administered and financed by the provincial government through the state agency Transit for Clayquot. Clayquot has extensive rail, rapid transit and bus services, all of which are entirely free to use.
Clayquot is the focal point of the province's railway and highway networks. Inter-city rail, provided by Kelssekian Pacific Railway and Via Rail, uses Union Station, a famous example of neoclassical architecture gazetted as a national heritage building. It is also served by a major international airport, Fred J. Stevenson International, which is a hub for Kelssek Pacific Airlines and a focus city for Air Kelssek.
Sports
Clayquot has two teams in the Kelssek Hockey League Division One, Clayquot Partisans and Red Star Clayquot, which share a strong rivalry and are generally supported by residents in the north and south parts of the city respectively. The city does unite behind its other professional sports teams: the Rugby Superleague's Clayquot Reds, the Kelssek Football League's Clayquot City FC, and the Kelssek Water Polo League's Clayquot Neptunes.
The national curling team also has its main training facility in Clayquot's suburbs.
