Overview
The United Socialist States of Columbica, a member of the NationStates region, is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate population enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level of social equality free from the usual accompanying government corruption.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 56%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Book Publishing.
Military funding has been stripped back, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, and the government is avowedly atheist. Crime is totally unknown. Columbica's national animal is the woker, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the comradicon.

Government
Columbica is a Socialist nation where equality for all is valued above all else. The Columbican People's Worker Party (CPWP) is the ruling party within the Columbican government. Other parties are not illegal but looked down upon (sometimes through the sights of a Columbican Police Force gun). Notable figures within the CPWP leadership are:

History of Columbica
Columbica was founded only 15 years ago when then college student Rick Delski dropped out of his computer science studies and made his way to the former United Slavic Socialist Union (USSU) to carve out a Socialist paradise in the confusion of the collaspe of the USSU. Finding a pocket of English-speaking farmers deep in the more temperate areas of Freezeria, Delski united them to form the first incarnation of the CPWP, the Columbican People's Worker Liberation Front (CPWLF). After 3 months of indifferent warfare (the crumbling government of the USSU's official statement was "good riddance"), the CPWLF was reformed as the CPWP and the United Socialist States of Columbica was founded.
The first years were rough, but when a vast concrete mine was found within the tiny new nation, production of Massive Plain Gray Concrete Cold War Era Office Buildings exploded. Zeroeth Comrad Delski was re-elected in a landslide (99.9% of the vote!) in the elections of 1999 and will face re-election again in 2009 after his current 10 year term expires.
Columbican Workers Freedom Day is celebrated on November 24th, the day the Good Riddance Treaty of 1989 was signed. Since the 3 month Colubmican Revolutionary War, Columbica has been a peaceful nation without war. On December 7, 2004 Columbica joined the NationStates region - again reaffirming its dedication to peace and prosperity for the workers!
Geography of Columbica
Columbica is a nation of three geographies and three climates.
- Cold and Mountainous The north of the country is cold, nearly arctic with many large and rugged mountains. This is the part of the country where the large Columbican State Concrete Mines are located - the driving force for the Columbican economy. Residents of this region were once nomadic but have been "encouraged" to settle down and work the mines for the good of the State.
- Not Quite As Cold and Oceanside The south of the country borders the ocean but is by no means a seaside paradise, with the Providence River Delta regularly freezing over for 8 of the 12 months of the year. This region is where Columberica's farming occurs and where most of its large cities are located.
- DeBilldar Peninsula The southern-most part of Columbica, the long narrow peninsula is the only part of Columbica that could be considered temperate and pleasant nearly year-round. This region is home to Delskigrad, the capitol, as well as the beachfront homes of the CPWP leadership. Fishing and Government Binders Full of Laws are the major products of this region.
