History

Early History

An ancient bronze artifact from the Early Bronze Age of Ethan Smith
The first people of the Great Land of Ethan Smith were from around the Early Bronze Age or around 2000 B.C. Archaeologists found that the earliest people were an agricultural society with some signs of metalworking with tin and copper. Bronze vessels used for rituals, farming instruments, and weapons were uncovered in recent archaeological digs. The famous Cornith Carvings in the Cornith Caves at the foothills of the Greater Chomla Mountains showed that these early people had their own writing. It still remains undeciphered to this day. Villages along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Magalenia near the town of Najamash, dating back to 1500 B.C., show evidence of early trading of bronze items with other early civilizations of the time.

Settlements from about 3000 years ago along the Aorata River and the Long River were heavily defended forts atop the rolling hills of the southern part of the nation. Each one had kings that ruled the walled part of the city along with the surrounding landscape. There were many coups and overturning of the leaders back then causing much turmoil for centuries. Around the 1st century B.C., the Chells people sprung up and annihilated the neighboring states eventually absorbing every other state in the vicinity. Wangi, the king at the time, managed to unite the Great Land of Ethan Smith. He installed a centralized government, a single currency, and a standardized measurement system. Most importantly, he unified the language to create a standard language for easier business and education. Because of these advances, the people of the Great Land of Ethan Smith still refer to themselves as the sons or daughters of Wangi. Although he brought along concepts that still are in effect in today's nation, he also brought many negative points. He ordered all he books that opposed his ideas to be burned. All the scholars that disagreed with his style of government were buried alive. Sixteen years after he became the ruler of a united Ethan Smith, Wangi died of mercury poisoning. The culprit was the disgruntled Officer of the King's Stables, Barlow. He put a lethal amount of mercury in Wangi's food. This put the Great Land of Ethan Smith back into chaos for another century.

Modern History

The first century A.D. were a time of reform for Ethan Smith. A new leader, Nizu, increased trade with neighboring states and improved the arts and literature. Ocean navigation was at its peak and riches from distant lands were brought to the nation. The arts were encouraged at this time which created master artwork only found in fancy-schmancy museums today. Many classic novels were also written at this time. The technological advancements were phenomenal. Boats were built stronger to sustain the growing navy. Medicine modernized greatly too, which sparked a jump in the population. The capital at the time, Cornith was booming. It was the center of trade and the arts for Ethan Smith and the surround region. This prosperity last for almost a millennium. To most people in Ethan Smith now, this is considered a time of enlightenment.

In the year 985 A.D., invading barbarians spread through the land causing widespread panic. They arrived by boat at Lahoyia Beach in the southeastern area of the nation and transmitted foreign diseases. The population declined rapidly and some people were enslaved by the conquering nation. They then colonized Ethan Smith and turning Ethan Smith into pandemonium once again. The capital, Cornith was sacked and moved to the newly built Martinos. After a century of brutal ruling, there was an uprising commonly know today as the Lahoyia Uprising, named after the famous general, Lahoyia Ponchbart that led armies of rookie soldiers across the Greater Chomla Mountains from the fertile banks of the Ekana River to the beach where the uprising started. The farmers grew tired of the unfair power and decided to revolt. Many lives were lost and upset the nation once more. After years of severe fighting, the farmers of Ethan Smith won. The barbarians finally left and the current Great Land of Ethan Smith was formed.

Kamike Island is on the eastern coast of Ethan Smith. As you move south, the landscape includes the mighty Wakin River, the oldest river in Ethan Smith. At the southern tip, the island of Koromas sits with a bright lighthouse warning of the turbulent waters around the island. The northwestern part of the nation is relatively flat with sparsely located hills. The Ashpin Forest lies in this area. This region is also fertile. Rivers

There are several rivers in Ethan Smith. The most vital is the Long River. Ethan Smith's earliest civilization started along the river. It starts out from Ferreiro Lake in the north of the nation and runs in a winding path mainly going from east until it runs into the Chachtee River. At the intersection, both rivers run south into the Gulf of Magalenia. The Chachtee River's headwaters are in the Marrock Mountains. It travels northward for most of its length, then makes a u-turn southward until it merges with the Long River. It winds through the countryside making many leisurely hairpin turns until it empties into the ocean. The Ekāna River runs southeast from Ferreiro Lake down to the ocean. Mountains

One of the mountains in the Marrock Mountains
There are two main mountain ranges in the Great Land of Ethan Smith. On the eastern coast lies the Chomla Range, while on the southwestern tip is the Marrock Mountains. The Chomla Range was formed by two tectonic plates pressing on the other causing the land to rise from the sea. Most of the Chomla Range was completely underwater thousands of years ago. The Marrock Mountains aren't mountains, but volcanoes. Most are extinct, but a few are active. They are mostly harmless because of the slow-moving lava flows. Although the city of Itadaki lies in the foothills of the Marrock Mountains, it rarely receives major damage.
