The Grand Empire of Magnus Valerius is the prominent power amongst the Kuric and Gedonian Continents. It lies on the southwestern portion of the Kuric Continent, effectively dominating the region with its large land mass and population. It consists of multiple states which where once independent kingdoms but were eventually engulfed by the rising empire centuries ago. Also known more commonly as The Valerian Empire, Magnus Valerius consists of the southwestern edge of the Kuric Continent, and several territories in the Valerian Archipelago (obviously named after the conquering empire) and on islands off the northeastern coast of the Kuric Continent. It is bordered to its north by Targoviste, Thutmosia, Kalmykstan, and Godunovia, to the south by Glasgova, the southeast by Basileia, and finally, to the east by Swabiana and Gothland-Ile de Le Draque.

Magnus Valerius has a long, rich history which started with the birth of such predecessor nations such as the Alexandrian Confederation. Today, Magnus Valerius is a developed country with, as the rest of the nations in the Kuric and Gedonian Continents, a high birth rate that may pose future problems for the nation. Magnus Valerius has a wealth of natural beauty, cities, and resorts that appeals to millions of tourists who come and visit Valerian shores.

Brief History

The southwestern partition of the Kuric Continent was a place of warring states in its early history. Around the 4th century BC, Slavic tribes invaded and literally destroyed the Democratic Republic of Thiese and substantially crushed the power of several other states that would have gained prominence in the region. Out of these Slavs emerged a small collection of duchies and city-states. The most established of these states was Isangrad, a thriving city on the River Vedus. It was Duke Valerian II (also known as Saint Valerian, 122 BC - 91 BC) who arose from the petty wars and trivial states to form the fledgling kingdom that bore his name: Valeria. His direct descendants formed a line of monarchs that would rule for nearly a millennium.

The Valerian Kingdom grew over a series of wars with its neighbors. It took centuries to finally conquer the entire southwest of the Kuric Continent to form what is now known as the Valerian Empire; the reign of Emperor George I (1340 AD - 1377 AD) finally unified all of the petty kingdoms, and the period of overseas expansion began. Empress Victoria I (1510 AD - 1566 AD) and her brilliant reign expanded the empire to its greatest extent (until the founding of the colony of Shorehaven by Alexander I; 2000 AD - 2012 AD).

Politics

Magnus Valerius is a monarchy, with little political freedoms for its citizens. Although many consider the nation to be rather barbaric, backwards, and reactionary due to its staunch fervor in its royalty, the nation no doubt is successful, thanks to good, capable bloodlines that have occupied the throne. The monarchy in Magnus Valerius has existed since Saint Valerian established the bloodline that lasts to this day in 122 B.C.

The emperor was once chosen through a strict patrilineal system that dictates that the first-born son of a currently ruling emperor as the heir to the throne. However, this has been tweaked: the emperor may now choose the most capable of his sons to be the heir. Daughters of the Imperial Family may also rise to the throne if there are no suitable male heirs and/or if the daughter has held off marriage until her father dies. If a daughter marries and there is no male heir, then her husband is designated as the future emperor.

There is also a Baronial Council in Magnus Valerius, where the aristocrats and various wealthy nobles and dignitaries come together to discuss laws and issues. They are often directly influenced by the emperor, but this may not always be the case. Sometimes the emperor is influenced by the barons in the council if they pressure the emperor to agree with their agendas. This act of influencing the emperor has mostly ended after the turmoil in the reign of Alexander I. The barons are now mostly responsible for making sure that the emperor's edicts are passed and enforced within the various regions of the empire.

Despite the lack of a democratic system, there are still political parties existing within Magnus Valerius that band together and create petitions to be proposed to the emperor or the Baronial Council. These parties are the remnants of Tsar Meijis' great experiment in democracy where Magnus Valerius, for a brief period of time, became a Constitutional Monarchy; Alexander I re-centralized power into the throne after Meijis died, which ended the foray into democracy. Parties such as the Valerian Worker's Commune, the Valerian Liberal Union, the Valerian Christian Socialist Party and the Valerian People's Party all present their issues and often represent a good portion of the people. The tsar, if he is benevolent, will listen full-heartedly to their propositions, resolutions, and desires, although an emperor does not have to bend to the wills and whims of such parties.

Geography and Climate

Due to its immense size in terms of territory, The Valerian Empire has many different regional climates. Magnus Valerius proper itself has fairly stable and very hospitable climates. Along King William's Sea is a ring of fair Mediterranean climate. Usually it rains during winter in this region. Along King William's Sea is also a section of temperate rainforests in the maritime region that is known as the "elven basin". Most of northern Magnus Valerius is highland or forested mountains, often with the occassional valley or steppe. Central eastern Magnus Valerius has a temperate climate with some high mountain climates and a small area of semi-desert that remains mostly uninhabited. The weather in the heartland of Valeria where the capital of Isangrad is fair and of a temperate climate. East of this zone is East Valeria, a large steppe. The southern portion of Magnus Valerius is dominated by a marine or maritime climate, with cool temperatures and plentiful rain.

Demographics

Ethnicities

The Valerian Empire is a diverse nation, with many significant and distinct ethnic groups. The majority ethnicity is, obviously, Valerian, at 58% of the total population, 390,637,026 citizens (2045 est.). Next would be Germanic peoples, which are either Gothic Valerians or Badenese Valerians. Gothic Valerians speak the ancient Goth language and live primarily in the state of Gothania (where they are the majority); Goths make up 42% of the Germanic ethnic group. Badenese are Germans that live in the mountainous region of Baden, and have traits and features akin to Austrians; they make up 58% of the Germanic ethnic group. They constitute 8% of the population, 53,880,969 citizens.

Greco-Italian Valerians include Greek Valerians and Latin Valerians. Greek Valerians are ethnic Greeks who reside mainly in Kydonia, Trikoupes, Deliyannes, Metashas, and parts of Romanovna, and they make up the largest chunk of the demographic category. Latin Valerians are found in the state of Victoriania.

French Valerians reside in the Nikeah region of Magnus Valerius proper.
