The city's motto is "The world's water tower", and many a Miervatian will be proud to boast what they consider one of the world's finest flood control systems. The symbol on the city's coat-of-arms is one of the early Risden River valley watch towers, which not only served to provide defense for Miervatia, but functioned year round as an early warning system for floods. Black, white, and blue have been the city's official colors since the completion of the watch towers by the city's first mayor Michael the Builder.

Geography

Narrow streets characterize many parts of the city.
</div>

The oldest parts of the city date back to fortifications, located on the bluff between the Risden and Vaud Rivers, that were used as a meeting point between communities located high in the Thuvian mountains and small valleys along the Risden River.

The city is divided into a number of wards, most of which date back to the 1800s. Due to the lack of flat surfaces, these older parts of the city are often characterized by their very narrow streets. These narrow streets served a defensive purpose, making it difficult for invading armies to bring any sort of siege equipment through the city.

Recent development has spread up along the sides of the mountains to the east of the Risden River in Mikitivity. Smaller communities have also developed on the western bank of the river in the Schnauzer Dominions. Typically people will live in smaller bedroom villages in the Schnauzer Dominions and commute across the border into Mikitivity to their jobs in and around Miervatia City.

</div>

Due its position in the Risden River valley and the heart of the Thuvian mountains, Miervatia City has a colder and more extreme continential climate. Precipitation is rather high year round, and the city is in constant danger of flash floods due to storms in the upper Thuvian mountains. Storms are frequent year round, with the region around the city being under cloud cover over 200 days every year. Storms typically come from the southwest or west and head to the northeast or east. However, flash floods along the Risden River are likely to come after an extreme rainfall event has passed Miervatia City and continued up the river valley to the northeast. Communication between Mikitivity cantons enables flood control engineers in Miervatia City to prepare for most flood events.

While there is a seasonal variation in temperature, the diurnal variations in temperature are limited due to the mountains immediately to the east and west of the city.

Miervatia City is a hub for rail, road, river, and air traffic in Mikitivity. It has several railway stations, including Miervatia Hauptbahnhof, Miervatia Zud, and Flughafen Biberwiesen. The Beaver Meadows station (as it is known in English) is part of the international airport. The city is a major transfer point for trains traveling through the Thuvians to Keeslandia or Sober Thought. All of the railway stations include tourist information offices. The city is surrounded by a number of military airfields, none of which are used for civil aviation.

Within the city and canton of Miervatia, Mikitivity Bahn also provides the local transit light rail and regional train service. The effiency of the network is so high that not only does it have one of the highest traffice density ratings in NationStates, but many residents have come to rely on the public transit system so much, few people living in or near Miervatia City own automobiles.
