The Spectrovision Song Contest is an international competition of music between regions of The Spectrum. The very first Spectrovision Song Contest was due to be hosted in Parodia, White-Rose on 21st May 2007. The hosts will be Teresa Myre-Robinson, star of TV series Protagonists, and Dylan Renard, popular White-Roseite radio DJ.

On the 22nd May, it was revealed that technical failure had resulted in several acts being unable to perform. The next day, the acts were revealed as the contest finally began.

Rules

Each country entered a particular song and had the artist perform it live on the day. Songs and artists must have been original creations, although heavily-altered existing artists would be permitted at the adjudicator's discretion. Entrants provided the following information before the event:

  • Artist Name
  • Song Title
  • Style/Stage Presence
  • Genre

Then, once the acts were performed, the nations would vote for each other's songs. Nations must choose songs to award 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point. Nations may not give points to their own entry. Only nations who have entered a song will be permitted to vote. The winner will eventually go on to host the next Spectrovision Song Contest.

Entrants

A total of 13 nations will be competing in the Spectrovision Song Contest. The song details are presented in running order which was randomly drawn by an independant adjudicator. Nations participating were confirmed on the 22nd May. Songs, artists and genres were revealed on the 23rd May.

Calumnius

Artist: Calumnian General Musical Act #734 (4 members, Lloyd Marx, Frederick Yule, Emma Feroyda, Gertrude Nietzsche)
Song Title: 'Hail, Calumnius'
Genre: Patriotic Rock (think Hendrix’s Star-Spangled Banner)
Style: Lots of Calumnian Flags – band members wear spandex Calumnian flag outfits. Projector projects the Calumnian star with accompanying green, yellow and red lighting. Guitar smashing at the end etc etc.

Buttery Boonswoggles

Artist: Silas Red
Song Title: 'Sweet Sleep Scent'
Genre: Post Rock/Neo-Folk
Style: A single spotlight breaks up the darkness of the stage, shining down upon the singer/guitarist. The guitar is gradually getting louder with a quasi-ethereal wail, before the bass and drums kick in. There is no choreography surrounding the performance, with only a single spotlight on each performer.
Throughout the song the guitar continues its odd ethereal tone, and the singer adopts a falsetto vocal tone. Melody is found within the synth player who is located at the side of the stage, facing sideways on. The bassist and drummer play fairly straightforward rhythms, allowing the focus to be largely on the vocalist and guitarist.
Before reaching the final verse, the music fades away with only the vocals heard, and a quiet hum from the now muted wail of the guitar. A short pause occurs, before an explosion of distorted guitar and bass, with fast and rhythmic drum patterns. At this point the spotlights are replaced with strobe lighting, and remains this way until the song’s end.

Eggfree

Artist: The Sugareggs
Song Title: 'Sugary Sweet Sugar Love'
Genre: Teeny-Bop Pop
Style: Fluorescent PVC pink outfits, with comedically styled microphones made to look like ice-creams. Do a lot of dancing in short skirts.

Dhatsun

Artist: The Dhatsvestites
Song Title: 'L'informatique'
Genre: Electro
Style: Computerised Freaky deaky. In a break from their ususal campness, the Dhatsvestites have gone all computer on you, dressed as androids and coated in silver. The Dhatsvestites have covered their stage in a 1960's view of the 21st century modern home style chic. Egg chairs are in abundance. Think MIB headquarters. Think heavily synthesised. Think new female singer. Think the new face of Dhatsvestites.

Domas-Porada

Artist: Death by Power Point
Song Title: 'Die Dodd Die'
Genre: Modern Rock
Style: In the style of 80's rock. At the end of the song they smash up a power point setup (which has been showing clip after clip of biology notes throughout), then the drummer and the rest of the band jump the lead singer, place a monk wig (one with the fake bald spot) stick him in a Dodd-like dress, shove a load of 'Quality Street' chocolates into his mouth and then 'beat the crap out him but not really' (to quote). And as the band leave the stage the lead singer will burst out into tears.

Sabrateur

Artist: Fixed on the Heart
Song Title: 'Oosh! (Song For Eggy)'
Genre: Motown-style R 'n' B/ Northern Soul
Style: Three glamorous female singers in long, silver dresses, backed by a smart live R'n'B band; drums, congas, bass, guitar, keyboard, brass and an 8-piece male choral group.

Mushy Pea

Artist: Contextual Expression
Song Title: 'Candy Passion'
Genre: Mushy Pop
Style: Overly-tacky candyshop stage set-up with pink and white candy-stripe walls. Two girlish looking men dressed in matching baby pink dresses with lollypop shaped microphones are stood in the ‘shop’. They are the lead singers with the band members acting as shop keepers. Over the top choreography playing on the fact they almost look like girls follows throughout.

Don Flanioso

Artist: The Coppola's
Song Title: 'Tonight, Your Gunna Sleep with the Fishes'
Genre: Swing
Style: 1920's style.

Ti Amero

Artist: Krifka
Song Title: 'A Bag Full of Doubloons for the Kraken Hookers'
Genre: Synth Pop
Style: Stage is decorated in cheesy cardboard waves and a orange dingy with the lead singer stood aloof. He has a patch over one eye, a harpoon in his right hand and his left leg is a peg-leg. The dancers are dressed in under-budget kraken outfits, and circle the lead singer, the dancers are looping round the dingy now and trying to seduce the lead singer; he lifts his eye patch and winks at one of the kraken women. Chorus starts, dancers move away, verse starts and the lead singer pulls out a large purse and starts swinging it rhythmically overhead. The kraken women move in and start grabbing at his massive purse until it rips in two and many doubloons fly across the stage. Waves become restless and the lead singer continues his lines before he is ‘thrown’ into the sea. Music comes to an end and the lead singer is seen to be clambering back on the dingy. Moments later a kraken woman is by his side, he pulls a seedy face and the two disappear under.

Nintenduu 64

Artist: Lesbana
Song Title: 'Deluded Heaven'
Genre: Rock/Pop
Style: 4 Woman Band. Singer lead guitar, drummer and bass guitarist. Singer and lead guitar kiss on stage.

Sherylannia

Artist: Electric Kiss
Song Title: 'Nothing Like A Girl'
Genre: Lesbian Synth Pop
Style: Very seductively dressed, and they dance very provocatively. At the end of the song, they burn a Nintendian flag, referencing the animosity between the two as a result of an accusation made by Sherylannia, that Nintenduu copied their act to a tee.

White-Rose

Artist: New Rave Rangers
Song Title: 'Drown'
Genre: Indie-Ambient
Style: Band is dressed in nothing but black wetsuits that each have a different colour of stylised detail on them. Vocalist has a blindfold over eyes during the whole performance. Actors made up as statues in marine-blue writhe and twist as if moving in slow motion during the song. At end, there is a flash as vocalist tears off blindfold, 'statues' go dead, and his eyeballs are revealed to be completely black (use of custom contact lenses).

Oldham Road

Artist: Doc Funk and the Funkaholics
Song Title: 'Alec Baldwin 'Little Pig' Techno Remix'
Genre: Techno
Style: Doc Funk will stand at a DJ set and mix Alec Baldwin's telephone message to his daughter with techno music. At intervals when Baldwin isn't bad mouthing his daughter, back up singers known as the Funkaholics will sing Alec Baldwins praises. Specifically about his role in films; Beetlejuice and The Departed.

Between the performances and the vote results, a ten minute interlude act was performed by the nineteen-piece band, 64-bit. Trivia

  • Controversy was again rife in The Spectrum, when there was large gap in time between the time that Ti Amero voted and the rest of the participants did. During the time, it was suggested that Ti Amero be disqualified, however the Spectrovision organisers insisted they would wait until votes from the nation were eventually recieved.
  • The governing body of the nation of Nintenduu 64 placed a massive bet that they would garner the infamous "nil points". However, as The nation of Don Flanioso gave them a single point, they lost the bet, as well as the contest.
