Geography

The Blissful Realm of Tonca is a small nation on the megalith of South Lancre. The capital, Catana, is located on the shores of a large inland sea which marks the western border of the nation. Other borders are shared with four other nations of Lancre and two oceans. Much of the lush mountainous interior is part of the Toncan National Park. Pristine white beaches line the coasts at the base of the megalith cliffs.

Climate

Average rainfall in Tonca is high in winter and low in summer. Winters are cold with snow falling to 1500 metres on the mountains. Summers are hot and dry.

National Pastimes

The Toncan climate is perfectly suited to a physically active lifestyle.

During winter most of the population (those not already working on the mountains) spend their weekend flying downhill on skis. In summer surfing on the ocean coasts or water skiing on the inland sea are common pursuits - after bungy jumping or parachuting off the Lancre megalith, of course! Hiking through the National Park is a breathtaking experience when the wild flowers are blooming in spring.

Tonca is also an active participant in The Lancre Cup. Often a large percentage of the population will travel to the host nation's stadiums to cheer on the team. Unfortunately Tonca has not achieved great success -- reaching the infamous three-way in the Quarter Finals of Cup XII, losing in the second round in Cup XI and the first round of Cup X. In the spirit of continued improvement, Tonca hopes to achieve great results in Cup XIII but has unfortunately drawn the current Cup organiser, Yesnono, in the first round. Did someone say bias??

Government

The small government focuses on civil liberties and social welfare with compassion and empathy being the guiding principles for most decisions, though often budgetry contrainst become a critical factor. The figurehead leader is elected by popular vote and given the ceremonial title of "Queen" or "King" for lack of a more imaginative, appropriate name.

Tonca has been the UN Delegate for Lancre but has since retired, paving the way for the former delegate, Bestiville, to resume power with new nation Determined cows.

Military

There is no national army of Tonca with the Toncan people preferring peaceful resolution to international incidents. When required, Queen Katriana has been known to use her feminine charms to avoid conflict with those nations suffering from an excess of testosterone.

Religion

Tonca is a secular nation with most citizens claiming no religion at the last census. Tolerance, though, is a value held dear to most Toncans and thus, minorities of Wiccans and Buddists quietly practice their religions and are virtually indecipherable from the average Toncan in their public lives.
