The Daleks (pronounced "DAH-lecks"; IPA: 'dɑːlɛks) are an extraterrestrial race of the mutated descendants of the Kaled people of the Planet Skaro, they travel around in tank-like mechanical casings, and are a race bent on universal conquest and destruction. They are also, collectively, the greatest alien adversaries of the Time Lord known as the Doctor.

Dalek Culture

Daleks have little to no individual personalities and a strict command structure, conditioned to obey superior orders without question. Ultimately, the most fundamental feature of Dalek culture and psychology is an unquestioned belief in the superiority of the Daleks. Other species are either to be exterminated immediately, or enslaved and then exterminated later once they are no longer necessary. The default directive of a Dalek is to destroy all non-Dalek lifeforms.

This belief is thought to be the reason why Daleks have never significantly modified their mechanical shell's designs to overcome its obvious physical limitations; any such modification would deviate from the Dalek ideal, and therefore must be inferior and deserving of extermination. Another offshoot of this superiority complex is their complete ruthlessness and lack of compassion. It is because of this that it is nearly impossible to negotiate or reason with a Dalek and it is this single-mindedness that makes them so dangerous and not to be underestimated. However, their reliance on logic and machinery is also a weakness that they recognise. As a result, they also make use of non-Dalek species to compensate for these shortcomings.

Ancient History

Prior to the rise of the Daleks, Skaro was the home of a humanoid species with two races, the Kaleds and the Thals. Both races went to war with each other, and the resulting mutations set in motion by the nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons used were soon seen by Kaled scientists as being the end of their species in its (ideologically defined) "pure" form. The Kaled chief scientist, Davros, accelerated the mutations and placed the results in tank-like "travel machines". These cyborgs then became the successors to the Kaleds, the dreaded Daleks (an anagram of Kaled). The inheritors of Skaro ruled a devastated planet, its seas dead and its surface devoid of almost all life. However, Skaro is rich in minerals which the Daleks use to build armies to conquer and destroy other worlds, with the objective of building an interstellar empire.

Geography

Skaro is a planet of roughly the same mass and dimensions as Earth, and the twelfth planet from its sun. Skaro has a blue-white sun and 2 moons. It has a single continent that is divided into east and west halves of almost equal size. Skaro is a nuclear wasteland, whose principle features are a petrified forest, a lake containing ferocious failed Dalek mutations, and the Dalek City.

Skaro is the only world capable of supporting life in the Skarosian System. It is a little over 20,000 miles in diameter, and has a core of solid ice. The word Skaro means "home" in old Kaled. The planet has one large continent named Dalazar that covers just over one third of its surface. The rest is taken up by the Ocean of Death. Before the Thal-Kaled War most of Skaro had a temperate climate, but now most of the continent of Dalazar is desert. These deserts receive rain only once every ten years (know as the Decarain) which lasts for seven months. In the more habitable areas of Skaro it rains once every four to five years. Most of Skaro's surface is still quite radioactive, and anti-radiation drugs are nessecary for humans to survive there for more then a few days. The massive Drammankin Mountain Range divides the continent in half. On the east side of the Drammankin Mountain Range is the area known as the Plain of Swords. It is here that the Dalek City, Mensvat Esc-Dalek is located - the Capital of the Dalek Empire. The city is bordered by the luminescent Lake of Mutations and the Petrified Jungle. To the north of City is a secret valley where the Thals hid from the Daleks. Other locations on Skaro include the Sea of Acid, the Lake of Snakes, and the Canyons of Terror.
