Domestic Competition

ubhashinim had been earmarked as a future star from an early age. She attended the Football Academy in Ellery Camp from the age of 15, later studying Economics at the nearby Underground University of Mount Ellery.

Born in Rodger River there was never any doubt she would don that city's colours which she duly did after graduating with a masters degree. Her impact upon the game in Errinundera was immediate, both for her skills and her popularity. Rodger River matches were constantly sold out as young men from all over the nation came to worship her, hence the nickname. At these games, the crowd would chant "ooba - she - num" to the tune of "The Volga Boatmen".

At 25 she had her best season ever, winning the filthyl medal for fairest and best player in the national competition and being rewarded with the captaincy of the Rodger River team. The following season she continued her divine form and, with the announcement that Errinundera was to contest World Cup 30, was made vice-captain of the national team. The potoroos were led by the 39 year old veteran, keok, for that campaign and it was clear that ubhashinim was being groomed as a future captain by the Errinundera Football Association.

Other Personal Details

ubhashinim was ethnically Oo: an alternative spelling of her name is oobazheenum. Whatever the spelling, it is an example of Errinundera's quaint use of capital letter technology. She was engaged to marry sari at the time of her death.

Death at Frosty Hollow

Located high up on the Errinundera Plateau, the Frosty Hollow stadium has the most notorious reputation for bad weather of any football ground in the nation. Despite repeated severe storm warnings from the weather bureau the Errinundera Football Association proceeded with the World Cup 30 qualifying match against Spaamanian Plijous.

Not long after the half-time interval the storm struck the ground with temperatures rapidly plummeting to -15º. A giant tree fell across the stadium and broke in two, with the centre portions falling onto the pitch killing ubhashinim instantly. Her captain, keok, was also struck but survived. 25 others died from exposure, dozens were injured and many more suffered frostbite including some of the players.

A newspaper account of the tragedy can be found here. The news of the disaster was also spread round the world by Ariddian international news channel PINA.

Memorials

The Errinundera Football Association created the ubhashinim scholarship for young overseas people to study at the National Football Academy. The first invitation was accepted by Ariddia who generously named their new ubhashinim Ahwa'u Stadium in her honour.
