An Overview and Brief History

Unspecifistan is a small, yet economically vibrant nation. Founded in early 2005 by the amalgamation of several tribes in Manchuria and western Mongolia, the nation was initially a loose republic, with a weak economy, poor diplomatic standing and little relevance to anyone outside its frontiers.

Then, in mid-September 2005, the system was changed. The Fifth president to assume leadership, Olaf Comnenus, decreed that he would be crowned king, and a new Constitutional Monarchy brought in. Now, capitalism and democracy were the buzz words echoeing through Imperopolis and its environs.

Since this dramatic usurpation from within, the new system has seen a booming population and an exploding economy. The military has become much more powerful, growing from 18,000 to 112,000 in a very short space of time with the help of compulsory military service.

So far, all has been well within this small state, though there are worrying signs from the western reaches, were old tribal tensions appear to be coming back into play.

The Government

The September 2005 elections thrust an unexpected government coalition into power in the 1453 member lower chamber. The Conservative National-Imperial Coalition smashed the incumbent leftist coalition on a platform of reform and social progress.

Parliament is bicameral, with the more powerful elected lower chamber (The Chamber of Deputies) and the appointed upper chamber (The Senate).

The Executive consists of the leader of the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies (currently Andronicus Palaeologus of the Conservative Nationals), who is styled Premier, and the coalition cabinet. There are 18 government departments in total, most of them now headed by members of the business community.

All business is done in the name of the King, and he alone possesses the power to disolve Parliament and appoint Senators. HRH Olaf IV Comnenus - the current king - is a member of the politically prominent Greek community from the coastal area. The Royal Household sustains itself through its businesses and investments, and hosts the fabulous social and cultural scene of the nation.

The Economy

The Unspecifistanian economy is vast in comparison to the countries' population, or its Republican predecessor. Based around the national wealth in wood, agricultural resources like cotton and grain and the rich uranium deposits, the economy has rapidly developed a service sector which is both thriving and suprisingly morally accountable.

Uranium mining and more extensive hydroelectric projects have lain the basis for an economy whose oil consumption is catergorically lower than would have normally been the case. Fuel economy is pushed hard by the government - eager to avoid importing vast quantities of oil and to develop the new technology and economic systems associated with energy independence.

The economic success of Unspecifistan appears to be guarenteed for the future, with a deregulated stock and bond market, strong legal backup for companies and individuals and a government dedicated to canvassing tirelessly for the economy internationally. The recent downturn has been reveresed, and all signs are pointing to a return to a super-power economy by the end of the year.

Racial and Religious Mix

The country of Unspecifistan is truly polyglotic in ethnic terms. The bulk of the population is divided into four key subgroupings - Greeks, Mongoloids, Ouvaytym and Pechian, each with their own traditions, committments and level of power.

The largest of the these groups are the Greeks, who predominantly live in the coastal and urban areas, and comprise about 45% of the national population. They are the largest group both in terms of size and of economic power, though they are very eager to delegate this to improve the nation - which they were key in setting up.

The next largest group are the Mongoloids, who are have a mixed Chinese and Mongolian ancestry and make up approximately 30% of the population. Their old tribal ways have fallen by the wayside as their economy leaps forwards, and they have become just as prosperous and united as the Greeks. Their political system has also advanced into the twenty-first century, with the old tribal divisions now disgarded in favour of Unspecifistanian political parties.

Next in size are the Ouvaytym and Pechian tribal groups, with 10% and 5% of the national population respectively. These two groups joined Unspecifistan hoping that the nation could resolve their long standing dispute over their huge steppe homeland. Initally, this ploy seemed to have worked, but the there have been some disturbing signs of tension, despite intensive diplomatic efforts (see later).

Of the remaining 10%, most are either Chinese, Jews or Armenians, with rest a mixture of Japanese, Slavs, Koreans, English, Dutch and even a few Indians. These minorities are important to the country as they possess dissproportionate economic power relative to their size, and are often the most vocal of the nation's citizens.

Religiously speaking, the empire is dominated by Greek Orthodox Christians. All of the Greeks, two-thirds of the Mongoloids and many of the minorities are Orthodox, giving the nation a total of 68% Orthodox. They come under the leadership of His Holiness The Metropolitan and Archbishop of Imperopolis, Euthanius I. The Metropolitanate of Imperopolis was established in 2005 after the special request of HRH Olaf IV for a unified leadership for the nation's orthodox churches. His Holiness, the Ecunemical Patriarch of Constantinople Stephanus III, responed positively, and the Metropolitanate was set up under his overall authority.

The remaining third of the Mongoloid population who are not Orthodox Christians follow a distinct Oriental religion, known as Monism, which remains on harmonious terms with the Orthodox Church in the country. These two bodies frequently co-operate on many matters of faith and moral issues, and the combined weight of the Monist High Preist and the Metropolitan of Imperopolis could be a significant force in the political arena.

The Pechian tribes are all fervent Muslims - whilst the rival Ouvaytym are devout Confucists. This religious divide has further accented the conflict between the two groups. The Jews are prominent in the country, and there are small numbers of Daoists, Buddhists, Shintoists, Hindus and other Christians.

Ouvaytym and Pechian Conflict

The Ouvaytym and Pechian tribal groupings have been at war for centuries. The two sides hold a fierce dispute over the rightful ownership of the steppe areas in western Unspecifistan. This dispute is attenuated by the two sides keen social and religious differences, and the fact that they both arrived in the region about the same time.

It is beleived by anthropologists and sociologists alike that these two groups are descended from the Mongoloid groups of people - but this link has not served to reconcile the two groups.

The conflict was meant to be resloved by the Unspecifistanian government, when the two groups signed up in early 2005. However, even after Constitutional upheaval, the crisis remains in place. Recently, the crisis has deepened, with frequent rioting, looting, murders and now car bombings. The crisis shows little sign of dying down, or of a peaceful resolution being near.

In light of this increase in tensions, the Unspecifistanian Government has appealed for international aid from Europa. The positive response has led to many thousands of combat and support troops being donated, primarily by the LT. These forces have been organised into the International Force for the Ouvaytym Mission, or I.F.O.M. The force will become active on the 31st October, once Parliament has approved legislation to give I.F.O.M. legal and diplomatic rights that will allow it to exectute its peacekeeping mission.
