DOS-2975-1

DOS-2975-1 as part of the DOS-2975 standard provides codes for the names for all recognised countries and dependent areas in the region of PEEL. It was first published in 2027 (STS) and defines three different codes for each area:

• DOS-2975-1 abel-2, a two-letter system with many applications, most notably the PEELnet top-level domains for countries.
• DOS-2975-1 abel-3 a three-letter system, also almost always used in international sporting events.
• DOS-2975-1 numeric, a three-digit numerical system

A country or territory generally gets new alpha codes if its name changes, whereas a new numeric code is associated with newly recognised governments that are set up in the stead of former countries but with altered boundaries. Nations that expand their borders when neighbours collapse tend to keep their initial numeric codes.

However in early 2055, the DOS reorganised all numeric codes to better incorporate all nations that are current or former members of PEEL, and overrode the previous rule of not altering numeric codes for renamed countries (Buergermeister becoming Burning Flame for example would usually have not required a new numeric code) however the rule is supposed to be reintroduced from now on.
