The Democratic State Assembly is a massive, economically stronghold capitalist nation with a population of just under three and a half billion people. Founded in early 2001 (realtime), Pilot has enjoyed a rocket boost in economic performance, coupled with easing restrictions on personal and political freedom. Much of its recent history has involved its attempts to reform the UnAPS alliance and Haven, the region where most of the member nations reside. Its directly-elected legislature and judicial system share power with an executive branch led by President David Mitchell, elected as the Democratic Party candidate in 2004. Pilot has one of the world's best education systems and its citizens are considered some of the smartest in the world, consistantly scoring in the 99.5th percentile in UN intelligence surveys. Pilot's major domestic policies include education and commerce, and its foreign policies have led it to two recent wars. Its economy is based on information technology and international commerce. Other recent events include the recent Senate approval of the Knootian International Stabilisation Treaty and its election to the position of Haven's U.N. delegateship.

Recent Pilotian History

Pilot first engaged the world stage with a partner nation, Edolia. Entering together into United Alliance Against Oppression and Tyranny, both nations shortly left after an armed conflict broke out between the two nations and the nation The Bisons.

After leaving UAAOT, Pilot worked with Edolia and several other NationStates nations to create the United NationStates Anti Oppression and Tyranny Organization, an alliance of which Pilot served as first Secretary of Policy, and then Secretary General for six months before the alliance was dissolved. A third attempt at an regional alliance was successful, as Pilot helped to ratify the Constitution of the United Alliance of Progressive States (UnAPS).

Pilot's first major involvement in international conflict was its war with Allanea. After the ally Edolia launched a campaign to stop Christian rebels from controlling several of that nations' southern cities, Allanea launched a counterattack to the aid of the rebels. Upon request of Edolia's strained forces, Pilot responded by initiating a series of attacks upon the Allanean homeland. After a brief lull, Allanea raided a Pilot Air Force Base. Pilot responded by invading Allanea, quickly destroying its forces and occupying the nation. Sovereign control was handed to Edolia shortly after the invasion, but with the help of Der Angst and the Empire of the Eternal Dawn, Allanea's government-in-exile was able to force Pilotian and Edolian forces to retreat. To this day, Edolia still maintains control over one of Allanea's provinces Axackal. Pilot, however, has washed its hands of the war and refused diplomatic relations with a new and friendlier Allanean government.

Pilot was once again put on the international stage to come to the aid of Edolia during the Edolia-NCA war. After Edolia attacked Allanea for its aggressive actions against the friendly nation of Gore-2004, the New Conservative Alliance launched a counterattack that demanded the preperation of forces of all branches of the Pilotian military. Old enemies reuniting on the battlefield, but little fighting was actually done and the war ended with no conclusion. However, it took a toll on Pilot's economy: because of the sudden buildup in forces and government spending, Pilot's top three stock exchanges, the Pilotian Stock Manager, S&O 1000 and Market 500 crashed on November 3, 2003 (realtime). It plunged the nation into deep depression, causing the fold of some of Pilot's most profitable companies, including Digital Technologies - responsible for 70% of Pilot's military production.

After the stock market crashed, Pilot followed a much more isolationist foreign policy. It began to pump more and more money into education and national commerce while cutting off military defense ties with allied nations. Pilot withdrew from the "inner" UnAPS alliance on December 16, 2003, refusing to pay member dues or participate in any of its regional programs. Republicans in Congress and the White House were emboldened with massive amounts of power, as Pilot's federal government held only six Democrats (two in the House, four in the Senate). Pilot participated briefly in the Allanea-UnAPS War in defense of its oldest allies, however, most of the support was logistical and Pilot lost no military servicemen.

Almost year later and a vast amount of economic reforms lead to the reflourishment of Pilot's economy. Employment, which was over 30% the year before, dipped to a historic low of 3.46%. Its GDP, which had been lower than fifty billion before, now topped 119 trillion - making it the second strongest economy in Haven (behind Feline). Pilot is now enjoying one of its longest prosperity streaks in history. The nation rejoined the UnAPS "inner" alliance in early 2004 and began to push for reforms and recent elections have made Pilot's intentions to deal with its perceived alliance corruption of values very clear. However, unable to attain their hopes, Pilot officially withdrew from the alliance entirely in November of 2004, citing "alliance-wide corruption of values" as the primary reason.

Pilot was formally elected to Haven's U.N. delegateship in late November. After UnAPS dissolved in mid-December, the nation began working closely with Edolia, Feline and the Scandavian States on regional organization efforts and has now become much more active in the NationStates United Nations.

Election of 2004

Although Republican President Robert Harrows presided over the rebuilding of the Pilot economy, recent reductions in political freedoms led Demoocratic candidate David Mitchell to victory over the incumbent by a staggering margin.

  • Governor David Mitchell (D-XB): 55,513,777,867 (54%)
  • President Robert Harrows (R): 44,527,231,222 (43%)
  • Nokia Benson (DS): 2,124,412,444 (3%)
