Overview

The Republic of Syskeyia is a federalrepublic located somewhere in Southeast Asia (with a province in the South Pacific and a colony on Mars), with a reputation for its fervent orthodox Catholicism, its long-standing republican form of government and its military prowess (or lack thereof).

National Information

Traditional Name: Respublica Syskeyiae Traditional Short Form: Syskeyia Abbreviations: RS Form of Government: Mixed parliamentary/presidental federal republic Location(s): Southeast Asia, South Pacific, Mars

Geography

Syskeyia is locatted somewhere in Southeast Asia, protected on nearly all land boundaries (save the Twin Shrine Pass and the Western Gap) by the Synora mountains. To the south is the Gulf of Syskeyia which leads to the Pacific ocean.

The southern part of the country is generally a mix of grassland, forest, and light and dense jungle. Through this flows the Nikea River, which extends all the way to the area around Syskeyiapolis. The Nikea River branches splits off into several major tributaries, most notably the Nihorkai river, which leads to Lake Nihorkai and the Naval Museum of St. Peter

Splitting Syskeyia into its northern and southern regions is the Kardja mountain range. This mountain range, in which Syskeyiapolis is nestled, is comparable to the Andes mountains in terms of temperature and climate.

The northern part of Syskeyia is much like the southern part of Syskeyia, with jungle and grassland alike. One very noticable geographical point here, however, is the Twin Shrine Pass.

Syskeyia's one terrestrial non-contiguous province, St. Peter Claver Island, is a lush, tropical South Pacific Island. Due to the threat of invasion of Amerigo, it is said to be heavily fortified.

Syskeyia's Martian colony is located on a flat plain bordering Sunset, Menelmacari carnil, Sentinel Two, Ravenspire, Vallance, Dajdbog, and the former Martian holdings of Der Angst. Syskeyian Mars' government has not participated in any terraforming programs, and all of its inhabitants live in domed cities.

History

Syskeyia's history goes deep into the past, much of which has not yet been recovered. It can be said, though, that the historical development of Syskeyia had eventually led it to become a number of squabbling feifdoms, generally shielded from foreign invasion by the Synora mountains

It history changed, however, in 1189. In that year, a certain English nobleman named John Williamshire, accompied by his brother, the Catholic bishop Anselm and several other bishops, and some of John's knights, set sail from Plymouth, England to accompany Richard the Lionheart on the Third Crusade. A strange wind blew his ship(s) off, however, and after a long, ardous voyage, he, Anslem, and the rest of his entourage finally arrived at what is now known as New Nicaea. John quickly founded the city and duchy of the same name and established friendly relations with the fiefdoms around him, while his brother Anselm evangelized the country.

While John thought of himself as a mere duke, events were to catapult him to a much higher officer. In 1225, an expedition of the Chinese Song dynasty burst through the Twin Shrine Pass bent on invasion and conquest. In a titanic battle involving forces from all the 72 fiefdoms which had converted to Christianity, John Williamshire beat back the invaders. Because of this feat of uniting and bravery, the rulers of the fiefdoms named John the first king of Syskeyia.

John soon therafter discovered the site of what is now Syskeyiapolis, and established his capital there. He ruled well, as did his son Adam I. There was realtively no foreign problems, save for a Mongol invasion in 1275, which was defeated by a certain David Mai shi-rong.

With the reign of Adam II, however, things began to change. Changing his name to Achilles, the new king soon abandoned his Catholic faith in favor of a new syncretistic faith of his own making, combining elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, Greek and Roman mythology with a little bit of Christianity thrown into the mix.

The government was able to tolerate the king's religious beliefs for a time, but when he began to persecute Christians and plotted to transform the Cathedral (now Bascilica) of the Holy Trinity into a temple of his own faith, the Syskeyian Senate in 1300 placedAchilles "the Apostate" on trial for numerous crimes.

The Senate found him guilty of his crimes and condemned him to death. Achilles refused to accept this, and the Syskeyian Civil War began. The war ended in 1303 when David Mai shi-rong, the Strategos Strategon of Syskeyia and commander of the Parliamentary/Christian forces, defeated the king once and for all at the Battle of Nova Ardea.

A republic was established, a constitution (the Constitutio Reipublicae) written up and two consuls established to replace the king. Why both consuls were said to hold equal executive power, one consul, called the First Consul was to enjoy "primacy of administration," in effect creating an executive branch of government not unlike the United States Presidential system.

During the first two centuries of the Republic, the mountians kept Syskeyia generally isolated from the rest of Asia - an isolation that may have been aided by her neighboring countries' scorning, intentional ignorance of her. Nevertheless, the Republic prospered and expanded, colonizing an uninhabited stretch of land to the south of her and adding three provinces to her lands.

In 1510 Syskeyia re-established contact with Western Chistendom. This began what is known as the Syskeyian Renaissance.

{More history stuff ... um ... sometime :) )

In 1803, the Constitutio Reipublicae was amended to add the title "President" to the First Consul's official office, thus making him the "President and First Consul of the Republic of Syskeyia."

Like the rest of Southeast Asia, Syskeyia suffered conflict and bloodshed in World War II. In January of 1942, the Japanese invaded Syskeyia, and got as far as the northern jungle when they were turned back. The Japanese were eventually driven out, but it proved to be a savage fight to do so, and soon thereafter Communist insurgents were smuggled in from China and Wikipedia:Russia, giving the Army a lot to do during the 1950s.

After the Communist rebellion was quelled, the country was relatively peaceful (Save for the Xavier and Loyola University Incident) until the 1980s. Then, the country became embroiled in the Objectivist War, with the government eventually defeating the Objectivist drug lords.

(Those drug lords would eventually wind up in The Reich as head of the nation of Objectivist Insurgents

The Republic of Syskeyia emerged from its relative isolation onto the international scene on Christmas Eve of 2002. Soon therafter, Benedict Michael Sukothai was elected President and First Consul.
