A replacement for the SM-2.IIIB and Aster-30 missiles currently in service with several navies, the "Erne" uses existing technologies to create an extremely agile and fast missile capable of defeating the most dangerous foes equipped with scramjet technology. The mixture of sensors on the GWS.57 as well as its inertial or command midcourse guidance (updated via secure datalink) ensure that the "Erne" is very resistant to ECM or other countermeasures. It uses thrust-vectoring to perform manoeuvres over 12g as well as PIF-PAF (Pilotage Induit en Force - Pilotage Aerodynamique Fort) reaction control that enable manoeuvres of up to 60g.

Characteristics (GWS.57)

Function: Medium-range surface-to-air missile
Service designation:
Army: FIM.57
Surface ship: MIM.57
Dimensions:
Length: 4.8 m (RBS.57 thruster: 1.714m; RMS.57 terminal intercept dart: 3.086m)
Diameter: 38.4 cm (RBS.57 thruster: 35.66 cm; RMS.57 dart: 32.7 cm; Including imaging infrared (IIR) and LIDAR blisters: 37.6 cm)
Finspan: 106.68 cm (unfolded)
Mass:
Missile: 664 kg (RBS.57 thruster: 358.18 kg; RMS.57 dart: 305.32 kg)
Warhead: 100 kg high velocity blast fragmentation
Fuzing: RF/LIDAR proximity, impact
Propulsion:
RBS.57 thruster: Dual-thrust solid rocket
RMS.57 dart: Variable-thrust solid rocket
Flight control:
RBS.57 thruster: Thrust vectoring, folding aft control fins
RMS.57 dart: Thrust vectoring, tail control fins, and "PIF-PAF" rapid reaction control thrusters
Guidance: Hybrid global positioning system/inertial monitoring unit with command midcourse guidance; dual-mode radar terminal homing; imaging infra-red (IIR) and short-range LIDAR collision guidance.
Launch Angle: vertical to 10° from horizontal, with 360° acquisition capability
Launch Systems: GWLS.33 series, GWLS.35 series, GWLS.58 series
Maximum range: 108 nm (200 km)
Altitude: >3m to 50km (Max. generally 30 km)*
Speed (maximum): Mach 6 (Typically Mach 5)
Maneuvrability: >60g
Cost: $1.2 million per unit

(* As is likely evident, the higher the altitude of intercept is, the less horizontal range the missile has.)

GWS.93 (GWS.57.E)

Dimensions:
Length: 6.72 m (RBS.93 booster: 3.634 m; RMS.57 dart: 3.086 m)
Diameter: 53.3 cm (RBS.93 booster: 53.3 cm; RMS.57 dart: 32.7 cm)
Finspan: (RBS.93 thruster): 106.68 cm
Mass: 2002.077 kg
Guidance: Hybrid GPS/INS with command midcourse guidance; dual-mode radar sensor terminal homing, with imaging infra-red (IIR) and short-range LIDAR collision guidance
Maximum range: >270 nm (>500 km)
Operational altitudes: 3 m to >120 km
Speed (maximum): Mach 7 (typically, Mach 5+)
Maneuvrability: >60g
Propulsion:
RBS.93 booster: Dual thrust solid rocket
RMS.57 dart: Dual-thrust solid rocket
Flight control:
RBS.93 booster: Thrust vectoring with folding aft control fins
RMS.57 dart: Thrust vectoring with tail control fins and "PIF-PAF" rapid reaction control thrusters
Cost: $1.72 million per unit
