The Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) is a department within the Ministry of Defence responsible for the examination, acquisition, adoption, and inspection of goods and services for the United Kingdom of Isselmere-Nieland Defence Forces.

Organisation

The DPA is administered by a minister of State, a senior member of government ranking beneath a minister.

The DPA is organised into four directorates-general (DG), each supervised by a director-general: the Directorate-General for Air, the Directorate-General for Land Systems, the Directorate-General for Naval Systems, and the Directorate-General for Space.

DPA numbers

DPA numbers were introduced in 1957 to cover all forms of guided weapons. Strangely, extended range guided munitions (ERGM) for heavy artillery pieces are not included within the DPA numbers, but instead are listed under INO numbers.

DPA numbers comprise of a three or four letter prefix — GWS for guided weapon system and GWLS for guided weapon launcher system — followed by the model number in Roman numerals. After the model number comes the launch environment indicator, which is typically the same as that employed by the UKINDF Uniform Systems Designation Scheme. Next comes the mark number in Roman numerals. This might be followed by a modification indicator, a miniscule letter. For example:

GWS.41M2b

meaning, Guided Weapon System number 41, Surface ship version, Mark 2, 2nd modification. In the UKINDF system, this same device is classified as MUM.41B2 for Surface ship version, Underwater attack missile, Model 41, Mark B, Modification 2.
