Henry V (b. 19 July 1965, r. 2004-present), full name Henry Robert Charles Caitwuil-Houmbertis-Sigurdsson-Alvarsson, His Isselmerian and Nielander Majesty the King of Isselmere-Nieland and Domains and Territories pertaining thereto, Lord High Steward of Glaines and Oldmarch, Lord Protector of Gudrof, Duke of Upper Gudrof, etc., is the head of state of the United Kingdom of Isselmere-Nieland (UKIN). He is the son of Robert VI (r. 1984-2004) and Queen-Consort Sophia. Henry V became king on 13 November at the age of thirty-nine upon his father's voluntary abdication.

Henry V graduated from the University of Daurmont in Tueslynn with a first with honours in chemical engineering in 1985, whereupon he joined the Royal Isselmere-Nieland Navy (RINN) as a midshipman. In 1990, he married Christine Anneliese Zbigniewski, a commoner, which led to a schism within the governing Conservative Party and the formation of the Loyal Monarchist Party. The couple has two children, Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess Ursula Sophia Margaretha (b. 1993), and His Royal Highness Prince Robert George Alexander (b. 1995).

In 2003, Henry left the RINN with the rank of captain of HINMS Queen Ursula to serve as his father's deputy on the Council of State.

Henry and the Queen-Consort Christine are members of the disestablished Calvinist Reformed Church of Isselmere.

Other titles

As King of Isselmere-Nieland, Henry V is King of Isselmere, King of Detmere (united with Isselmere in 1014), and King of Nieland (joined with Isselmere in 1562), as well as the Duke of Upper Gudrof, which is the last remnant of the former kingdom now principality of Gudrof.

Historically, the King of Isselmere and Nieland held the duchies of Glaines, Huise, and Oldmarch, titles that have since devolved to other members of the Royal Family. In their stead, the monarch bears the title Lord High Steward of Glaines and Oldmarch.

Until 1986, the King of Isselmere-Nieland was the King of Isselmere and Anguist (joined to Isselmere in 985). Since the Constitution Act, it is the Crown Prince who bears the title of Prince of Anguist, causing the honorific of King of Anguist to be dropped from His Majesty's informal title. A committee of the Council of Peers is presently deciding whether the same should happen to the king's title of King of Detmere.

As noted above, Henry V bears the official rank of Captain in the Royal Isselmere-Nieland Navy. He possesses a baccalaureate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Daurmont and a master's degree in Military Science from Citadel University, the foremost royal military college in Isselmere-Nieland.[1]

Reign

Henry V's reign has been marked by several controversies, the first of which being his father's voluntary abdication. In 2001, Robert VI jocularly averred in an interview with Patricia Golminster of INBC 1 that:

[At] thirty-seven years of age, it [was] about time the [Crown] Prince took some responsibility in learning the family business.[2]

In truth, the then Crown Prince had been attending meetings of the Council of State and the Privy Council with his father since he was sixteen.

Henry V further courted controversy by publicly requesting the Democratic Labour government of Thomas Blakeney to delay the transfer of what was to become the Europa class heavy command battleship to Credonia.[3] Influenced by the Praetonian monarch and President Mike Sarzo — with whom the UKIN had been allied through the Organisation of Maritime Powers — Henry V called a royal audience to undermine the sale of the design to Credonia. It was, however, the Royal Shipyards of Isselmere-Nieland's willingness to sell the design to other nations, primarily to recoup the losses from design and construction, that finally scuppered the deal between Credonia and the Blakeney government. The Credonian government successfully sued the UKIN before the Court of the Four Realms and received the money it invested as well as a compensatory damage settlement, the latter paid out of the Royal Treasury.

The next incident in which Henry V was involved was the Inkanan Civil War. It has been suggested by some historians that the king's formal declaration of war against the Inkanan Confederacy, prompted by the Blakeney government's support of the Inkanan monarchy, was an attempt to humiliate the Democratic Labour Party and so hasten the return of the Conservative Party, or at the very least of the Liberal Democrats, to office. The public and royal records on the matter are still under seal, so it may be fifty to one hundred years before the true answer to this conundrum is discovered.
