The Meritocracy is a close alliance of regions, with The New Meritocracy as its capital. It is governed as one region by the democratically elected The Senate, members of which are prohibited from joining the United Nations. The Senate is headed by the Consul. Other officers are Censor, Quaestor, Praetor, Tribune, and Aedile. It has a Charter that goes by the name of The Accords and a body of laws, which can be amended and changed by a democratic proposal to the Senate.

The Meritocracy has traditionally held in high esteem the values of national sovereignty and capitalism, though there are notable exceptions. These values have been manifested in the recent joining of the Alliance of Capitalists, Conservatives, and Economic Libertarians (ACCEL).

There are currently 27 nations who hold Senate seats in The Meritocracy:

The Accords

The Accords is the New Carta Magna of the Meritocracy. Created by Aesculapius's Primero Lucianno. The idea of this new charter came after the renewal of the Meritocracy.

The Accords started as the "Aesculapian Ideas" here presented,

Various proposals that I'll throw out here for possible implementation in a new Charter/Treaty:

  • Ability for Senators to call for the expulsion vote of any Senator, if seconded and thirded. Expulsion vote does not necessarily have to be a simple majority, but I think that given the tendency for Senators to vote to keep people in, a simple majority would not be unreasonable.
  • More elections. I know that in the past, we've said that Consuls should have the ability to pick people that work best with them, and it is a nice feeling to get picked as an officer, but I think that the officer jobs should be elected in a staggered manner. Eliminate the position of Vice-Consul, and set up a temporary line of succession in case the Consul is incapacitated/resigns, which would hold the fort until an emergency Consular election. Elections are fun, and it would give more of a chance for people to hold official positions.
  • Restore "abstain" to work like this:

In any case, here's a way to think about it that makes logical sense: when counting votes, you count the number of votes that are "aye" and "nay" compared to the TOTAL number of people that have voted. That way, the people that are abstaining technically aren't voting either way, but majority passes are harder to attain.

(If that doesn't make sense- let's say 4 people voted aye, 3 voted nay, and 3 abstained. In our current system, bill passes. Under this new system, it doesn't- only a 40% approval) It is far better to err on the side of caution with citizenship applications, legislation votes, etc. Too many people abstain, which is problematic.

  • Eliminate the MoJ. Keep the Tribune position, which would act essentially as the Chief Justice does currently in guiding a trial. However, the trial process should be simple: Censor as prosecutor, Tribune as judge, defendant can retain counsel, Senate acts as jury. Trials should not take longer than a month.
  • Move GUSTO here, (not really part of the Charter, but still a good thing) get the MCB back on track.
  • Remove officer restrictions on who can run for Consul, BUT, Senators that have not been officers should require an extra # of people to nominate them. (5 wouldn't be too unreasonable, I don't think)
  • Keep the Ministries. I know people have been saying to get rid of them, but they really do help organize things and keep stuff together. Also, without Ministries, the various Ministers would have much less to guide them do their jobs. If necessary, we can get rid of Ministry votes, but I don't feel it's necessary- few bills have actually been rejected by Ministry.

The above is a copy of the real draft of the first ideas of what is The Accords, after many rounds of voting the new charter was created. And at the moment is the Carta Magna of The Meritocracy.

ACCEL

The Alliance of Capitalist Conservatives and Economic Libertarians, is an organization created by the Former Meritocrat Jasque. Jasque who is also Member of the OSN, is a talented and gifted Economist that has been member of the NationStates world for over a couple of years.

Recently the Meritocracy joined this particular organization because of its principles and also the common goals they share.

More information about The Meritocracy - ACCEL will be given under the course of time. This is because ACCEL its going throught its ratification process.

The Herodotus Project

The Herodotus Project, the most ambitious RP project ever created in NS, this is an ongoing, extensive effort to describe the RP history of the Meritocracy from 3500 years ago to today.

Starting in the year 1500 BC (Meritocratic Time) up to the year 2000 AD (MT), this new and improved method of role playing gives you the opportunity to chose in which era you would like to specify your role playing, giving specified situations, wars, weaponry, everything. By far the most complete Role Playing project for NationStates.

Beginning as a simple idea by some senior members of The Meritocracy, The Herodotus Project is at the moment in its early stage and its open to all members of the Meritocracy.
