The Borderlands of Sabrateur are a large nation towards the west of The Spectrum. As a nation, it prides itself on its stunning environment - an area which the government actively seeks to preserve, as it is one of the finest in the region. It is also a fiercely democratic state, with citizens having superb political freedom. The nation holds many traditional values whilst still embracing modernity, and citizens are renowned for their patriotic nature, particularly with regards to the monarchy, which was recently saved in a national referendum with a strong majority. Sabrateur has a modest army, as it strives to maintain peace and safety across The Spectrum, seeking to calm any conflict between nations and taking a conscientious stance against violent confrontation. For this reason, the government has a keen interest in international politics, and was in part responsible for averting the recent planned invasion of O Re Sa Ma by Mushy Pea. Its capital, Kashmir, is renowned as a centre of education and politics, and for its warm climate and outstanding architecture.

History

The Sabratese people existed for many years as a nomadic tribe, an off-shoot of the Romani tribe, disillusioned by the empire's rule. The people roamed the lands around Calumnius and Undracor, before they elected to dwell in an area on the north east banks of the Synaptic Gulf, c. 1100, when they established the first Sabratese city and capital, Kashmir. Here they found prosperity in the lush environment under the leadership of their King, King Ranulph I.As the population burgeoned, groups left the confines of Kashmir and, at the commission of the monarch of the time, built new cities. As time progressed, clear borders were established with other nations of the region; Petersvillia and Daveanoyl Chloride to the west, Enthalpy Change to the south, Oldham Road to the east, and the huge nation of Calumnius to the north. These neighbours have come to be strong allies, both politically and economically.

Government

At the time of Sabrateur's birth, the King had absolute power, and decided on all state matters, from taxes and laws to war and peace. However, this was gradually phased out after the introduction of the Sabratese League of Gentry, an early incarnation of parliament consisting of various nobles and lords, who owned land in Sabratuer, in 1463. It was brought in due to the young age of the King, Ranulph VI, as a sort of protectorship, but was kept on due to its success. They assembled in the Building of Men in Kashmir, and were presided over by the King, until the election of the first Prime Minister, Nicholas Fuellaite, in 1728. Elections since then have been held every five years. The League was renamed as the Sabrateur Parliament in 1752, and from then all citizens have been eligible to become a Member of Parliament (MSP).

The Sabratese Monarchy

Sabrateur prides itself on being one of the few nations in The Spectrum to have a monarchy, founded by Ranulph I. It is unique in that, to this day, it is an unbroken bloodline of the Chassigne family, and the current monarch, King Alexander James Chassigne V is the direct grandson of Ranulph, 32 times removed. Alexander James is a very popular figure, and was saved in a recent move to abolish the monarchy, with 73% in the national referendum voting to keep the monarchy. Although now the sovereign holds no politcal position, he is still a widely respected and charismatic figure, and regularly campaigns for peace and foreign prisoner amnesty. Although he is the richest man in Sabrateur, he is still noted for his philanthropy and living a modest life, being awarded the Ranulph Peace Medal in his 5th year of reign. King Alexander James is married to his wife of 16 years, Nina Chassigne (neé Firth-Starkey), and they have a son (and heir) Stephen, and a young daughter, Andrea.

S.A.T.O.

In 2007, Sabrateur became one of the founding members of S.A.T.O, and alliance set up to promote trade and defence between member states, in a climate where the growing influence of The Good Guys is particularly evident. The Sabratese government was accused of being jealous of some of The Good Guys in regards to the amount of land that some of the nations had, although these allegations were discovered to be completely unfounded and based on inaccuracies.
