Goals and Basics of the ADN

The Alliance Defense Network's mission is to be devoted to the defense of its member regions, and to protect the freedom of natives of any region to live in peace and prosperity, free from invasions and/or unwanted imperialism. The Alliance Defense Network is both revered and reviled by the defender and invader, respectively; however, wherever one's partisanship may lie, it is a force of the NS world.

The ADN is NS' largest alliance, consisting of around 55-65 member regions at any given time. Well-known member regions include Equilism, Nasicournia, Federal Commonwealth Society and her territories, the Rejected Realms, and Alcatraz. In the past, Freedom Fighters, the West Pacific, and the North Pacific were also notable members.

The ADN strives to improve international communication between freedom-loving regions by hosting Ambassadors from well over 100 regions, many of which hold Embassies on the ADN forum. In the event of an international crisis, the ADN also hosts international conventions geared towards solving the problem. Notable conventions in the past have included numerous international meetings on the NPO, the liberation front against Great Bight in the North Pacific, the Coalition for a Free TNP against Pixiedance and the NPD of the North Pacific, and most recently, an international meeting concerning events in the West Pacific. The ADN does dispatch Ambassadors to non-affiliated regions upon request.

Regional and national sovereignty has become a priority of governing the ADN due to past experience with previous forms of governments. No nation of any ADN region is required to participate in any defender activities, unless a fellow member region is under attack and said region has troops available to help out. The ADN does not have the power to declare war or make peace on behalf of member regions, though it has acted as a mediator of conflict in the past. Due to the sovereignty of foreign policy setting by member regions, the ADN also cannot form official alliances, though it does maintain unofficial alliances and military cooperation treaties (non-binding to member regions) with several other defender groups and regions, including the Allied Liberation League (A.L.L.), Ten Thousand Islands Treaty Organization (TITO), the GLA, the Oceanic Security Agency (O.S.A.), 10000 Islands, Pacific Defenders, and the North Pacific (& NPA).

Upon the adoption of the Articles of Alliance, current governing document of the ADN, the ADN Council re-elected Pope Hope as Director. This time, the AoA made the Director position permanent, a move contested by a few members but largely supported by the majority of the ADN. The Director position therefore became more of an advisory role, handing more authority to the elected Deputy Director. The Council President also became an elected position. Secretaries of Defense, Intelligence, and State are appointed by the ADN Cabinet and voted into office by the ADN Council. Since the adoption of the AoA, the ADN Cabinet has been known to invent positions for anyone interested in serving in a more active capacity. Each region is accorded one vote in the Council so that each member has an equal voice in important decisions. The Council members not only represent the opinions and votes of their home regions, but are also responsible for raising issues brought up by the general ADN membership in the Council Lobby. The ADN Director and Deputy Director are not allowed to serve on the ADN Council, and the Council President must be selected from the sitting Council members.

Since the adoption of the Articles of Alliance, the ADN has moved away from the bureaucracy that had previously infested its halls, and back to the heart of the foundation of the alliance--defending. This minimization of politicking and the creation of a friendlier atmosphere has resulted in an expansion of ADN membership from 20 regions to the 61 regions of the ADN today.

Controversy

The ADN's goals are contested in some circles. Certain parties claim they have repeatedly intervened in affairs where they were not wanted. This is largely due to extreme differences of opinion with other world powers, namely the PRP and RLA.

Before the implementation of the AoA, the ADN stood as the world leader in refusal to recognize the People's Republic of the Pacific as the legitimate government of the Pacific. The ADN, like many defender organizations and neutral regions, deemed the PRP rise to power unscrupulous through the controversial invasion/usurping of power by the NPO. Because of this refusal to accept the New Pacific Order as a legitimate government, which is now the People's Republic of The Pacific, early in the days of the ADN the USSR was forced into a trial to defend its alliance with the New Pacific Order in which the USSR was found guilty of treason for being allied with an enemy of the ADN. Due to the trial and events surrounding the outcome, the ADN became a full democracy under a Constitution which was later thrown out in favor of the current ADN Articles of Alliance. The AoA now prevents the ADN as an organization from dictating the foreign policy of member regions, so policy on the legitimacy of the PRP is left up to each individual region.

After the declaration of martial law and the implementation of the AoA, three member regions renounced their membership of the organization: Greece, the Allied States of EuroIslanders, and The Proletariat Coalition. However, changes to the ADN were also viewed as positive by many upon the adoption of the AoA. Shortly after the change, the ADN added over 20 new member regions to their roster and experienced a new wave of positive public opinion. The split did create lasting tension between the ADN and their socialist counterparts of the Red Liberty Alliance, though recently attempts have been made to end the age-old rivalry.
