The Coalport- or Town-class (2007) frigate is under development by the Royal Shipyards of Isselmere-Nieland (RSIN) for the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom of Isselmere-Nieland to replace the Bullfinch-class, which has become over-matched by foreign designs in recent years. The Coalport-class is still significantly smaller than frigates of many foreign fleets, but cost, crewing, and dockyard considerations necessitated an "abbreviated" design. It is highly unlikely the Royal Navy will be able to fund a direct one-for-one replacement of the Bullfinch-class.

The Coalports mark a return to diesel motor and gas turbine machinery — actually, combined operation diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) — that provides good endurance at lower cost over the hull's lifetime. A nuclear-powered variant is, however, likely to be produced for export with a larger complement to ensure reactor integrity.

Unlike some earlier RSIN designs, the Coalports have far fewer weapon systems. For the most part, the ship's design engineers emphasised general purpose launchers such as the GWLS.35M2, in addition to the close-in weapon systems (CIWS) like the GWC.68M2 gun-missile complex with its 35 mm autocannons and two eight-cell vertical launching systems (VLS), and the GWLS.65M 10-cell trainable launcher, although the latter system might be replaced by GWLS.68M VLS to reduce maintenance issues. Four-cell autonomous operation capable GWLS.66M2 provide very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) along with two N43 remote weapon stations (RWS) based on the L42A3 30 mm autocannon.

Baseline anti-submarine armament, other than the helicopters and uncrewed rotorcraft and their associated weapons, consists only of two two-tube trainable deck-mounted twenty-one inch torpedo launchers.
