The L119 general purpose machine gun (GPMG) or light machine gun (LMG) is based on Fabrique Nationale de Herstal's mitrailleuse d'appui général (MAG) and Minimi machine guns. The L119 is the fireteam machine gun in the UKIN Defence Forces (UKINDF).
The L119 fires from an open bolt. There is no option for selective fire. The L119 has a push button safety.
The L119 can accept either belted ammunition or L117 rifle magazines. The intention of providing this feeding mechanism option was to improve flexibility of operation, but in practice it has only added weight to the system.
The L119 has a gas regulator attached to the quick change barrel permitting rapid switching in combat without resorting to tools, with the barrel release fitted to the side of the weapon in line with the breach. The barrel is chromed as well to reduce fouling and to prolong barrel life.
The L119 is equipped with a Picatinny rail atop the cartridge feed cover able to accept a variety of sights, from standard day optics to thermal imaging or other systems.
