The Marquess-class amphibious assault command ship was a revised version of the Union-class aircraft carrier designed to serve the lead ship for Marine expeditionary brigades. For this purpose, it has a massive flight deck to support most of a brigade's fixed-wing conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) air support element — with the exception of tactical airlift/aerial refuelling aircraft — and a vast landing well for much of the brigade's equipment.
