The Maanenic Pound or De Gulden van Maanenland is the principal currency of Maanenland. Currency is not produced by the Central Bank of Maanenland but instead by individual banks and in some juristications , provinical governments.
The sign for the currency is £ or rarely ML. Both originate from the Latin for Pound. The international currency code is MNP. One Maanenic Pound is split into 100 Centipondi.
History
The current currency mechanism developed from pre-union times whereby each individual kingdom had it's own currency as did each of their local banks. When Maanenland united for the first time in the 11th century there was no agreement on a currency union as it was ultimatly a military and political union.
Even following the standardification schemes of the 18th century the currency systems were left untouched although the number of currencies had dwindled from around 3,000 to just 56 by 1990.
Currency System
Each issuing institution must abide by the Maanenland Tonnage and Poundage Act 1923 , this stipulates that every currency issued must be tied to a fixed object and that the currency must be equivalent to a Standard Maanenic Pound value of that product. The SMR Index is used to regulate how much a Standard Maanenic Pound is and is fixed on a tri-monthly basis by the Department of Internal Commerce. In terms of pricing all prices are given in Maanenic Pounds and it is up to the shopkeeper whether they choose to accept the currency as payment for the product. The only legal tender is the Maanenland Government Pound which is fixed directly to the SMR , ie. 1 Standard Maanenic Pound = 1 Maanenland Government Pound.
