The number of member nations varies constantly, but is currently roughly 30,000, a number of which maintain embassies specifically to the United Nations. Nations may for example wish to affirm through their embassy their beliefs, reasons for adhering to this international organisation, and that which they wish to achieve.
Role
The role of the UN ambassador varies from nation to nation. In general, representatives at the UN will debate legislation, contribute to drafting of proposals, discuss the state of the UN, and sometimes submit their own proposals. The degree to which the ambassador is involved in these processes can differ: some have a mainly ceremonial role whilst staff workers submit proposals; some take on many of the above roles themselves. Getting blind drunk in the Strangers' Bar is however a near-universal duty.
