Geography

The Allied States of the Lowland Clans is located in the southeastern portion of the main continent in Atlantian Oceania, and have begun exploration of the northern most portion of the largest eastern island. The nation consists of nine member states, each spereated into multiple provinces and municipalities. The captial, Graham City is a special Federal Municipality which counts a province during presidential elections. The Capital is located on the southeastern coast, and is located about a two hundred kilometers north of the Pedrianan border.

The Allied States is seperated into three main climate zones. In the nothern part of the country, from the Rendition border to the Crystilakere Channel, edging south, is very mountainous and is the location of most of the Allied States heavy industry. The central portion of the country, about sixty kilometers north of the border edging north till it meets the mountains, is the forested region of the nation. Reknowned for it's cold winters and excellent summer weather, a majority of the Allied States population lives in this area. In the remaining southern portion of the country is the grassland region, where ninety percent of all agriculture takes place. This is the least populated portion of the country, but the coastal resorts are incredibly popular across the region.

The Allied States population as January 2080 is 5,207,000,000 billion. The majority of the population lives in the massive cities in the central and coastal areas of the Alliance, with the country areas attempting to combat the city sprawl pouring out from the coast.

Member States

The Allied States of the Lowland Clans operates as a confederation of individual nation-states. Currently, there are 9 member states in the Alliance. Four of them have their roots in the British Isles, which were abandoned when the Allied States fled to SGN. They are the Kingdom of England, the Scottish Republic, The Free Republic of Ireland, and the Dominion of Wales. The fifth member state is the Confederation of Canada, formed with a pact between the native Five Nations alliance and the Allied settlers. The Mediterranean Coalition is a nationstate formed by the former Yugoslavian republics and Albania, taken during the Meditterranean Conflicts with Abu Dhabi Khristatata. The second republic to be formed from the Mediterranean Conflicts was the United Mediterranean Alliance, composed of Greece and the island of Cyprus. The third state to come out of the Mediterranean Conflicts is the Free Republic of Portugal. The only State to be included since the move to Atlantian Oceania is the Legal Republic, composed of annexed portions of Former Legalese, but they have not yet sent representatives to the State Senate because of the unrest by the Anarchist faction and UN mercenaries.

Bordering Nations

To the northeast, the Allied States borders Starblaydia. To the northwest and west the Allied States borders Druida, Rendition, and Abattoir. To the South, the Allied States borders the Grand Dominion of Bedistan and it's colony, Pedriana.

Major Cities

Given the huge population size of the Allied States, major cities house almost fifty percent of the Allied States population, while thirty-five percent live in the minor cities and fifteen percent live in the country or suburban areas. Currently, their are ten 'major cities,' that house at least one hundred and seventy-five million people.

  • London - 372 million people
  • Dublin - 319 million people
  • Graham City - 307 million people
  • Limassol - 284 million people
  • Athens - 257 million people
  • Belgrade - 237 million people
  • Sagdineo - 187 million people
  • Plansville - 180 million people
  • Lisbon - 179 million people
  • Glasgow - 178 million people

Climate

Climate in most of the Allied States is rainy, with just over a hundred days of sunshine for your average year. The southern region of the Allied States i known for it's mostly flat and slightly hilly prarie, which is where almost all of the agriculture of the Allied States takes place. The middle region of the Allied States where most of the former British cities are located is evergreen forest, prone to heavy snowfalls in the winter. The northern region, approximately one-fifth of the Allied States land territory is located, is almost all heavily mountainous region, where most of the mining and industry is located in the Allied States.

The capital Graham City is located in middle region, just bordering the Portsmouth Peninsula (the small peninsula about midway up the coast of the Allied States).

Economy

The Allied States of the Lowland Clans has always had an incredibly strong economy. Through a combination of tarrifs, subsidies and a strong manufacturing base the Allied States have some of the strongest economies in Atlantian Oceania. The Allied States has a massive auto-manufacturing industry, whose cars dominate the landscape thanks to huge tarriffs and the high quality of the cars. The industry also doubles as a military manufacturing sector, that's the required equipment being dual-use, meaning that the Allied States can put out huge numbers of tanks, ships and airplanes at a moments notice.

History

The Isle Crown Wars and Founding of the Allied States

The Allied States of the Lowland Clans is a long, industrious civilization who has roots in the aftermath of the English Civil Wars, the Commonwealth, Protectorate and the re-instatement of a constitutional monarchy. After the fall of the Protectorate, many supporters of Parliament were itching to put an end to this Puritan heresy and threat to the English people. After the resignation of Richard Cromwell and the re-instatement of Charles II, he and Parliament set out to drive the Puritans from England.

The entire British nation was thrown into choas. With the just disbanded Puritan army still controlling most of the arms in the nation, the Puritans began resisting the attacks by the government and their supporters. Using carefully crafted incidents, the leaders of the Puritans turned public opinion against the government. Soon, riots against the new monarch and his parliament sprung up all across England, Ireland, and Scotland.

As unrest spread, a carefully organized rebellion led by the Puritans under their General Cromwell III, thought to have been aided by the French, though no evidence was ever found, took place. Seizing most of northern and western England, the Puritan-led dissidents began preaching death to the Throne, and the Isle Crown War began.

With the the English forces focused on the Crown war, Ireland and Scotland took this chance to declare their independence from the English nation. In Scotland, the Highlanders began moving to control the nation’s new crown and parliament. Unfortunately, the Lowland Clans, led by the Grahams and MacIntyre’s, got wind of this plan to crush Lowland resistance to Highland dominance. The Clans allied together in a blood pact, and began the Scottish Crown Wars. With the Lowlands taking the northeastern coast, and there capital at Inverness, they launched a naval attack using hastily constructed ship yards to attack Edinbrough and seize the capital.

The attacks, led by Admiral Nathan MacIntyre, succeeded but at a heavy cost. Edinbrough was devastated, and the Parliament building destroyed by retreating Highland forces. As they expanded the beachhead, the Lowlands were offered an alliance by the Catholic Irish, who were engaged in there own problems with Protestant English settlers who sided with the Puritans. The Lowlanders readily accepted, and soon, a full scale alliance was underway. As the Irish were forcing the last remnants of the Protestant forces in Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland, the Welsh broke free from English dominance as the Puritans began to press further and further towards London. They also contacted Irish and Lowlanders in terms of joining the Alliance.

As Welsh troops began to ship out, mainly to western Scotland to deal with the Highland stronghold of Glasgow, Puritans prepared to make the final thrust on the Monarchists, whose territory now included just London, Reading and Oxford and the area between. The Puritans cut off London from Oxford and Reading, and prepared for what appeared to be the final battle for England. Unfortunately for them, the Monarchists had a trick up their sleeve. After the particularly devastating battle for Colchester, the Monarchists found battle plans for an invasion of Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Quickly moving to inform the alliance, the papers quickly did what they were intended to do. After the fall of Glasgow, the Alliance would strike a blow for the Monarchists.

At Glasgow however, the story was different. The city was heavily fortified, and the last true stronghold of the Highlanders. The city itself was in ruins. As the entire Lowland army, along with a strong Welsh contingent, many inside the city were ready to capitulate, but the Highland leader, Baron Devon, refused to give in. The siege lasted a week, with the walls of Glasgow caving in on the seventh dawn of the siege. The city was nearly burned to the ground in the ensuing battle, where Baron Devon was captured and executed by the victorious General Graham, leader of the Lowland Grahams. Inverness was renamed Graham City in his honour, and the Scottish Crown Wars were brought to an end.

A warning message was sent to General Cromwell III from the now Lord-General Graham, leader of the Allied States of Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and it was to abandon the rebellion, lay down your weapons and surrender or be wiped from the face of England. Cromwell ignored the warning, and two days later it proved to be a fatal mistake. The Welsh struck at the Isle of Man, easily overwhelming the defenders and defeating the prison garrison. With the release of the Monarchist prisoners there, the Monarchists had begun a revival, defeating the Puritan forces at all three cities. They soon took total control of the Thames, and a joint British-Welsh task force took the port City of Bristol after heavy fighting. This move split England into three parts, the stronger lower half of the Puritan Crown Territories, the Monarchist middle and the weaker northern section of the Puritan Crown Territories.

The Irish and English took responsibility to invade the Southern half of the Puritan Crown Territories, while the Welsh and Scots took responsibility to invade the northern half. The battles went extremely well in the North, where Carlisle, Middlesbrough and Durham all fell within the first week. In the South though, things were different. An attempt to launch an attack on the capital at Canterbury was easily repulsed by the coastal fortress that had been constructed there. Attacks against Exeter and Plymouth failed miserably. As the Welsh swept through Manchester and Liverpool, the Scots attacked Leeds and Sheffield. The northern half, where troops were only station sparsely, couldn't contain the following unrest. The northnern half broke off and joind the Alliance, just a month after the invasion.

But the soutern half continued to hold. After the third battle for Canterbury, the Alliance was ready to simply burn the city to the ground using spies. But soon, a breakthrough was made in the west. Exeter fell after the reinforcement and the addition of Scottish siege machines, and Plymouth surrendered after the death of seventy-five percent of theri population due to starvation. The southern downs were the last Puritan strongholds remaining. In only a year, the Allied States did what it took the Puritans almost twelve years to do: drive their enemy to the edge of defeat.

After the fall of Brighton, which had been under seige for a month after the fall of Portsmouth, Canterbury was the last Puritan (they now called themselves the Chosen) city. It had been almost twenty years since the Isles had known peace. Canterbury would not surrender, and a join land-sea operation took place. An advanced guard of Welsh Gaelic soldiers were placed inside the city thanks to extensive infiltration of the crumbling Chosen government. As the soldiers went loose just after sunset, the Allied fleet under the command of Admiral McIntyre bombard the ramparts of the coastal fortress, catching them by surprise as they destroy the fortesses fearsome guns. On land, a massive army of a hundred thousand soldiers plus artillery support crashed the walls of Canterbury. This combined pressure led to the capture of the so-called "Saviour of the Curch, Mankind and All Creation," and also insane, Lord Cromwell III.

The Alliance, Glorious Time, and Beginnings of an Empire

After the fall of Canterbury, the Allied forces began to move quickly in organize the Isles into a respectable nation. With the series of wars, over twenty percent of the population of the British Isles is thought to have died. The manufacturing and agricultural base of the Isles was destroyed in the wars. But Lord-General Graham and his Provisional Parliament began the creation of the Allied States of the Lowland Clans, a permanent alliance to take the place of the English rule that had dominated the Isles for such an extended period of time.

Graham brought many key philosophers into the first Provisional Parliament, and set them a task of creating the Charter of Alliance, the form by which the government of the Allied States would hold by till the formation of the Empire of the Isles in 1797. As Parliament went about their furios deliberations, Lord-General Graham's popularity soared, and the British nation began to regain some sense of stability and respectability. With the Declaration of Religious Toleration and the Proclamation of Rights by his government, Graham skillfully manipulated the people into line with his rule, but refusing to make the mistake of abuse of power that many a monarchs had made previously.

He encouraged growth in manufacturing and basic agriculture, ensuring the British state would remain self-suficient for years to come. He also re-asserted his dominance over the colonies in India and North America, in a series of conflicts known as the Colonial Conflicts. He wisely treated the defeated with respect, and instilled the same declarations applying them to the colonies. A year later, he would rule over a reunited Britain with the most prgressive political system in the history of civilization.

Soon, in 1680, the Provisional Parliament completed the Charter of Alliance, and by 1681, all the states in the British Isles, England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, were united in the Allied States of the Lowland Clans, behind the leadership of President-Elect Graham, and his State-Senate.

This period in the History of the Allied States would become known as the Glorious Time, a time of great prosperity and military strength. The French, who had attempted to move in on English possesions overseas, were defeated in King Louis' War, and were forced to renounce much over their own overseas holdings. The Allied States renewed alliances with the Scandanavian nations and the German states. The political developments began quickly, and the forming of the three main political parties of that era: The Unitarians, the Federalists, and the People's Party. These parties generally grappled over political power, but often found the sense to come together on important issues.

After a landslide election victory in England and the Canadian Confederation and federal elections in 1790, the Unitarians began to enact increasingly centralizing policies, much to the alarm of the Federalists and Populists. The Unitarians had begun a slow power grab designed by an extremist party leader Lucas McKeen. After visitng Spanish South America and Dutch East Indies, he began having dreams of prosperous imperial ambitions for the Allied States. He knew that the Federalists and Populists would throughly reject any legislation that began to create an empire for the Alliance. He knew that base Unitarian support would not be enough to control the State-Senate to be the creation of such an empire, but the Unitarians could very easily move to swallow the Populist Party should they endorse their platform.

As President-Elect, he ordered the Presidential Guard to begin planting propaganda that would damage the credibility of the Federalist Party. A murder here, a paedophile there, key bribes, and soon much of the Federalist Party was losing ground. The Scottish branch of the Federalists however, put two and two together and began arming a small group of rabid supporters and began increasing the numbers of Scottish militia. They also hatched a plot to steal documents that implicated the Head of the Presidential Guard in several framing plots and bribing scandals. But the Presidential Guard had a mole inside the party. Sean McDougherty, a Irish immigrant that had become a key representative in the Scottish Parliament, sold his soul so to speak to the Unitarians for a position of great power in the coming Empire.

As the Federalists set their plan in motion, riots began to spread across the Alliance. Rumors of French support for a Federalist insurrection In the Canadian Confederation incited violence on both sides of the Channel. The approval rating of the Federalists began dropping like a stone. Playing right into McKeen's plan, the Scottish Federalists launched the fatal raid that condemned their party to a hideous death. During the night of October 5th, 1796, Federalist militia attack several Alliance military bases on the English-Scottish border. They also raided the Presidential Residence, across from Buckingham Palace. But the Unitarians ambushed the Federalist forces, killing every last one. That same night, Alliance and Guard forces raided nearly every Federalist party buildings, sending the party and nation in choas.
