German is a West Germanic language in the Indo-European family spoken in RL Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and parts of Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. It is often assumed as national language in NationStates nations, especially if the nation in question is modeled after some historical German state. However most players do not speak German so they Babelfish for translations or use the few things they remember in their text. This practice makes it necessary to distinguish between NS-German and German, which is actually understood (for example: 'States' is far too often translated as 'Zustände' which is the plural of 'status', not of 'state' (See also Germanische Zustände, which should actually be Germanische Staaten).

German has spawned many dialects, one of the foremost being the commonly spoken Attican dialect
