This article is about a nation in Atlantian Oceania. For the city of the same name, see Commerce Heights (city).

Commerce Heights is a large, democratic nation, known for its unusual economy and government, a system known as capitalizm. It is located in Paripana at the edge of the region Atlantian Oceania, and has a population of over five billion living almost entirely in urban areas.

Geography

Commerce Heights stretches across most of the western half of Paripana. The region on the large island Paleoparipia is generally considered the mainland, but the nation also includes a large non-contiguous region of Evestigatus, Kaiwu Island, Sonoma Island, Syoko Island, and eighteen of the major Jativan Islands. The nation is divided into ten states, excluding the Capital Territory on Paleoparipia, containing the capital city of Commerce Heights. Most of the terrain in Commerce Heights is relatively flat, but some areas in central Sokojito and Lontorica have tall mountains. Much of southwestern Paleoparipia is a desert, due to heavy pollution before the creation of the Unified Capitalizt States. The population of 5.67 billion (80 CE estimate) lives almost entirely in urban areas, though there are some undeveloped mountainous areas. Although the long coastlines are well-developed, the largest cities are inland, with some exceptions.

Bordering Nations

Commerce Heights is nearly surrounded by Tingitana, by land and water. The northeastern border on Paleoparipia is shared with Lontorika, and the western coastline of Evestigatus is somewhat close to Communist Rejistania and Communist Heights.

Economy

Commerce Heights’s economy is the strongest in Atlantian Oceania according to many estimates, including NSEconomy, and the United Nations has classified it as “Frightening” for over a century. The GDP is nearly XAU 500 billion, and the per-capita GDP is over XAU 90, though some claim that this is because government officials have influenced calculations of the nation’s gross domestic product. The government does not interfere in the economy, though UN reports sometimes label money paid to corporations by criminals who damaged their property as a subsidy. There are no taxes, since national defense is handled entirely by private militias such as the Capitalizt Defense Alliance and the judicial system is payed for by those that use it. There is a large trade deficit, but it is far surpassed by the nation’s economic growth.

History

Manhattanite Revolution

The original nation of Commerce Heights was formed in present-day New Manhattan (the state, not New Manhattan the nation), when the Manhattanite people saw that Boopsylavnia’s pan-Paripanan empire ruled over them unjustly. This Manhattanite Revolution was relatively bloodless, as the Boopsylvanian government was already dealing with other revolutions in Lontorica, Baetica, Sokojiwa, and some other nations. The Manhattanite government became known as the “Free-Market Republic,” though it was truly no such thing–it regularly interfered in private transactions. Its first Prime Minister, who went by the name Mayor Efficiency (his real name is unknown), led the nation through 36 years of prosperity.

The Mrzigod administration

After Mayor Efficiency retired, the second Prime Minister, Chan Mrzigod, was elected. Under his 13-year administration, a number of reforms were made, such as the creation of new economic laws, bringing with them a new name for the Manhattanite government, the Überkapitaliztrepublik of Commerce Heights. the annexation of southern Sokojito (소코지토) after its fall. After Lontorican officials suggested that the nations of Paripana abandon the tyrannical Baetican rule, Mrzigod led the effort to form the region Terranordalis, which led to a new era of economic growth in the region. He then formed the Terranordalis Union, which, under his leadership, helped improve international relations in Terranordalis. Mrzigod resigned after his third four-year term as Prime Minister, but was forced to serve for over 1 year after that when the election of 10 BCE could not be resolved.

Capitalizt Revolution

Mrzigod was replaced by Sharkey Carlin, who created a series of popular reforms that severely hurt the Manhattanite economy. He is widely considered the worst leader of Commerce Heights in foreign policy matters, as his actions were a significant part of the downfall of the Terranordalis Union. His domestic policy, though there is some evidence that it was productive, angered many Manhattanite citizens, particularly those in Jativa, who began the Capitalizt Revolution. The basis of the Revolution was a set of eight independent organizations, one in each of the Manhattanite states, which claimed to be the legitimate government of Commerce Heights, although they had no real authority. The only fighting during the Revolution was a bombing on the headquarters of the Aeropag Tribune, which was then the official newspaper of the Unified Capitalizt States, the name of the rebel government. The revolution was quickly ended in 0 CE, when Jack Dalton was elected Prime Minsiter, and dissolved the Überkapitaliztrepublik as his only official act.

Assimilation of foreign cultures

Under the Unified Capitalizt States, many efforts were made to preserve the cultures of other nations, particularly Akéla (Ακήλα), Jativa, Khiousagahd, Lontorica, and Sokojito. These efforts were very successful in Sokojito, as Neosokojito Special Administrative Region (now Saeloun Sokojito Teukbyeol Haengjeong Jigu (새로운 소코지토 특별 행정 지구)) became a new home for the Syokaji (쇼카지) culture. Millions of Syokaji citizens immigrated from Lontorica, where the Syokajis were marginalized, not even allowed to keep the name of their capital, Sokojito Dosi. More recently, when the Lontorican government fell, a large portion of the nation was annexed by the Unified Capitalizt States to form Neulontorika Special Administrative Region (now Neue Lontorikanische Spezielle Verwaltungsregion), where Lontoricans experienced a new era of self-government. The States had much less success with the Jativan culture, as the native population had been all but wiped out by Manhattanite immigration under the Free-Market Republic and Überkapitaliztrepublik.

Fall of Bedistan

In early 36 CE, an unexpected invasion by their former colony, Tingitana, forced the Bedistani people to leave their home in Terranordalis. With help from several nations there, the entire population was transported to their new homes in Atlantian Oceania, while Tingitana conquered the old Bedistani territory. This led to a long-standing dispute between Commerce Heights and Tingitana, as both nations claimed the unorganized territories in former Lontorica and Tarraconesis, which were administered by Bedistan, but were not actually part of the Grand Dominion.

Move to Atlantian Oceania

In late 61 CE, the Capitalizt government under Matthew Sparks became increasingly concerned by the economic stagnation of the Unified Captializt States, something that was not anticipated by capitalizt theory. The CEO received a proposal from John Sheppard, commander-in-chief of the Capitalizt Defense Alliance, to have a fleet of helicopters transport the entire Terranordalis region near Atlantian Oceania, where Commerce Heights would be able to join that region. The States have yet to form many diplomatic ties with other nations in their new region.

Tingitanan War

In 62 CE, CEO Matthew Sparks was assassinated while making a routine public appearance in Commerce Heights. After a special election, he was replaced by Branden Stout, who instituted a plan to stabilize the dispute over Lontorica and Tarraconesis. The Unified Capitalizt States instituted a vote in Lontorica, Tarraconesis, and Lukeonia (whose government had fallen more recently). Every territory in Tarraconesis and Lukeonia voted to join the Unified Captializt States, over Tingitana’s objection, though only Königeland in Lontorica voted to join. Two other Lontorican territories, Seantoria and Thuringia, voted to remain independent, while Nordwestbedistanie AFR voted to join Tingitana. CEO Stout respected these decisions, and immediately had Capitalizt Defense Alliance forces secure the regions. Although many Tingitanan organizations threatened to invade Lukeonia and Lontorica, no attack ever came.

Conflicts

The Unified Capitalizt States currently dispute Königeland with the recently-formed nation Lontorika. Commerce Heights claims the area on the basis that the population voted to be annexed by it, but Lontorika disputes this, claiming that the Lontorikan people should be united under a single nation.

Government

The Unified Capitalizt States of Commerce Heights consist of the CEO, elected by the shareholders, and his subordinates, appointed by the CEO. The government is responsible for maintaining the military (which is weaker than the Capitalizt Defense Alliance, and often requires its assistance), as well as the police force for the Capital Territory. It also oversees the states, each of which handles matters such as translation of the nation’s laws. The individual cities (with the exception of Commerce Heights in the Capital Territory) are each responsible for maintaining a police force, though most cities turn to private organizations to provide service.

Sports

Commerce Heights actively participates in several sports, including football (soccer), slaniball, and bribery (the unofficial national sport). The largest Capitalizt sports organization is Capitalizt Sports Leadership and Numismatic Intervention (SLANI), a subsidiary of the Commerce Heights Engineering, Athletics, and Technology (CHEAT) Alliance which manages domestic and international football. SLANI’s wide scope allows it to provide large bribes to World Cup hosts, allowing the team to perform better in the tournament. Most of SLANI’s income is earned from ticket sales for massive CHEAT stadia, some costing over XAU 100 million. Since other organizations lack such massive resources, Commerce Heights lacks a strong team in other sports, with the exception of bribery, a sport created by Capitalizts.
