Under Prime Minister [[Chan Mrzigod]], the second leader of Commerce Heights, several reforms were made. Mrzigod attempted to decentralize the government early in his term, in order to make the annexation process smoother. This proved to be beneficial in February 19 BCE, when the governments of Sokojito and Sokojiwa fell. Commerce Heights signed a treaty with Lontorica to split Sokojito—the Manhattanites received southern mainland Sokojito, the north part of Syoko Island, and nearly all of the territory on Evestigatus, Lontorica received northern mainland Sokojito and expanded its holdings on Syoko Island. Mrzigod was a key participant in the push to form the [[Terranordalis Union]], an international organization that helped to resolve intraregional disputes. Late in his second term, he made efforts to streamline the government, producing what came to be known as the Überkapitaliztrepublik.

The Unified Capitalizt States of Commerce Heights (German: Vereinigte Kapitaliztische Staaten von Handelshöhen, Greek: Ενοποιημένα Κεφαλαιοκρατικά Κράτη των Υψών Εμπορίου Enopoiēména Kephalaiokratiká Krátē ton Upsón Emporíou, Noterelenda: Estedes Kapitalízmires in Unidires Altálemes Teriadem, Syokaji: 통일뒌 자본가 주 상업 고도의 Toŋʼildwen Jabonga Ju Saŋʼūb Godoʼyi) is a country in eastern Atlantian Oceania. It is a unitary state well-known for its unusual economic system, capitalizm.

History

The islands of Paripana were originally settled by the United States of America in May 126 BCE. The colony’s lack of representation in the national government eventually led to rebellion, ending in the formation of the Boopsylvanian Empire in May 104 BCE. As the new government stabilized, heavy immigration occurred and large concentrations of Korean and German populations formed in the north and east, while the American population grew around the cities of Commerce Heights, Columbia (present-day Kumbara), and Cordubovica. As time passed, these regions developed unique cultures from the capital of the Empire, Boopington. This led to a series of revolutions from 57–54 BCE, in which the Korean populations formed the states of Sokojito and Sokojiwa, the German population formed the state of Lontorica, and the primary American population centers became the capitals of Commerce Heights, Bedistan, and Bætica.

The new Commerce Heights government, the Free-Market Republic, quickly elected a prime minister, who never revealed his name, but was known only as Mayor Efficiency. Under Mayor Efficiency, the first Manhattanite colony, then known as St Peters (now 성자 피텃 (Sūŋja Pitūs)), was founded on Syoko Island, in February 51 BCE. When Sonoma Island was discovered to the east, in September of that year, the government determined it to be more suitable for colonization, and struck a deal with Sokojito, having them turn over their colonies on that island in exchange for control of the area surrounding St Peters.

Commerce Heights expanded further in the next decade, by setting up the New Lexington colony on Evestigatus. In December of 43 BCE, due to internal pressures, the Jativan government was forced to relocate to the East Pacific, leaving the Jativan Islands in chaos. Commerce Heights was the first nation to step in, annexing the northern islands in January 42 BCE. Soon afterwards, Bedistan and Bætica made claims to the other islands.

Under Prime Minister Chan Mrzigod, the second leader of Commerce Heights, several reforms were made. Mrzigod was a key participant in the push to form the Terranordalis Union, an international organization that helped to resolve intraregional disputes. Late in his second term, he made efforts to streamline the government, producing what came to be known as the Überkapitaliztrepublik.

Some actions, such as the official legalization of certain monopolies, including PariMedia, turned many people against Mrzigod, and he failed to be re-elected for a third term in a landslide. However, since the two leading candidates, Sharkey Carlin and Avery Nanale, both received exactly 598 487 919 votes, Mrzigod continued his job as interim prime minister until the election could be resolved. Carlin was finally awarded the office on 24 February 7 BCE, 264 days after the election.

Carlin was a skilled politician, and he used the government to intervene in the market in ways perceived to be beneficial to workers, such as instituting a minimum wage, enforcing “fair” labor standards, and heavily taxing wealthy citizens. By 3 BCE, his approval rating had soared to over 80%. However, more and more people became opposed to these interventions, and on 18 May 0 CE, an organization known as the Unified Capitalizt States, led by Matthew Yates, declared its independence from the Überkapitaliztrepublik and claimed to be the sole legitimate government of Commerce Heights. Several small engagements took place during the revolution, the most deadly of which was a bombing of the Aeropag Tribune building in Aeropag, the headquarters of the Unified Capitalizt States. The revolution ended peacefully in 2 CE, when Jack Dalton, who secretly supported the revolution, was elected as prime minister and disbanded the government as his only official act. After Yates’s term as CEO ended in 4 CE, Dalton was elected and stayed in office until 10 CE.

On 9 January 12 CE, under CEO Peter Thornton, a group of private corporations met to form the Capitalizt Defense Alliance (CDA), a military coalition stronger than the armed forces of the Unified Capitalizt States. The next day, a fleet of small TechConGroup spacecraft under CDA command took advantage of an unstable Aquillan government to capture Sirius D, the Aquillan homeworld, for the States. The land, along with land annexed due to the simultaneous collapse of Khiousagahd, became a new semi-autonomous Aquillan state. On 7 March 30 CE, the government of Lontorica similarly collapsed. The land was divided into three regions—one which would become the new Capitalizt state of Neue Lontorikanische Spezielle Verwaltungsregion, one which would be split into Bedistani states, and one which would be unowned, but administered by Bedistan. These new states allowed these cultures, along with the Syokaji culture, to survive without nations of their own.

The largest government collapse occurred on 28 September 36 CE, when Tingitanan anarchists successfully invaded Bedistan, capturing all of its land and forcing the Bedistani people to evacuate to Atlantian Oceania. This led to a dispute over the areas of Lontorica under Bedistani administration, which were claimed by both Commerce Heights and Tingitana. The Unified Capitalizt States and CDA both attempted to secure the Lontorican land, but were never successful.

On 22 January 61 CE, after a suggestion from the commander-in-chief of the CDA, John Sheppard, CEO Matthew Sparks ordered all of the Paripanan islands moved from Terranordalis to Atlantian Oceania. The move was completed on 3 February, leaving all of the islands intact. However, the unilateral move angered Tingitana, causing tensions to build over the disputed Lontorican land. On 19 June 62 CE, Sparks was assassinated, the first time a Manhattanite or Capitalizt leader had died in office. The New Manhattan Police Department strongly suspected that the shooting was ordered by Tingitanans, but no evidence was ever found. After an emergency shareholders’ meeting, Branden Stout was elected CEO. Stout immediately confronted Tingitana, ordering referendums held in the disputed regions—which now included Lukeonia, whose government had recently fallen. All of Tarraconesis and Lukeonia voted to join the Unified Capitalizt States. Königeland voted to join the Unified Capitalizt States, but, since Nordwestbedistanie AFR chose to join Tingitana and the other two states decided to resist Tingitana on their own, Königeland was surrounded by the other Lontorican states and Tingitana, and therefore could not join the States. Tingitana attempted to invade Lukeonia in the following month, but failed to reach any major city before being defeated by the CDA.

Geography

Commerce Heights stretches across most of the western half of Paripana. The region on the large island Paleoparipia is generally considered the mainland, but the nation also includes a large non-contiguous region of Evestigatus, Kaiwu Island, Sonoma Island, Syoko Island, and eighteen of the major Jativan Islands. The nation is divided into ten states, excluding the Capital Territory on Paleoparipia, containing the capital city of Commerce Heights. Most of the terrain in Commerce Heights is relatively flat, but some areas in central Sokojito and Lontorica have tall mountains. Much of southwestern Paleoparipia is a desert, due to heavy pollution before the creation of the Unified Capitalizt States. The population of 5.67 billion (80 CE estimate) lives almost entirely in urban areas, though there are some undeveloped mountainous areas. Although the long coastlines are well-developed, the largest cities are inland, with some exceptions.

Bordering Nations

Commerce Heights is nearly surrounded by Tingitana, by land and water. The northeastern border on Paleoparipia is shared with Lontorika, and the western coastline of Evestigatus is somewhat close to Communist Rejistania and Communist Heights.

States and major cities

Economy

Commerce Heights’s economy is the strongest in Atlantian Oceania according to many estimates, including NSEconomy, and the United Nations has classified it as “Frightening” for over a century. The GDP is nearly XAU 500 billion, and the per-capita GDP is over XAU 90, though some claim that this is because government officials have influenced calculations of the nation’s gross domestic product. The government does not interfere in the economy, though UN reports sometimes label money paid to corporations by criminals who damaged their property as a subsidy. There are no taxes, since national defense is handled entirely by private militias such as the Capitalizt Defense Alliance and the judicial system is payed for by those that use it. There is a large trade deficit, but it is far surpassed by the nation’s economic growth.

Government

The Unified Capitalizt States of Commerce Heights consist of the CEO, elected by the shareholders, and his subordinates, appointed by the CEO. The government is responsible for maintaining the military (which is weaker than the Capitalizt Defense Alliance, and often requires its assistance), as well as the police force for the Capital Territory. It also oversees the states, each of which handles matters such as translation of the nation’s laws. The individual cities (with the exception of Commerce Heights in the Capital Territory) are each responsible for maintaining a police force, though most cities turn to private organizations to provide service.

Sports

Commerce Heights actively participates in several sports, including football (soccer), slaniball, and bribery (the unofficial national sport). The largest Capitalizt sports organization is Capitalizt Sports Leadership and Numismatic Intervention (SLANI), a subsidiary of the Commerce Heights Engineering, Athletics, and Technology (CHEAT) Alliance which manages domestic and international football. SLANI’s wide scope allows it to provide large bribes to World Cup hosts, allowing the team to perform better in the tournament. Most of SLANI’s income is earned from ticket sales for massive CHEAT stadia, some costing over XAU 100 million. Since other organizations lack such massive resources, Commerce Heights lacks a strong team in other sports, with the exception of bribery, a sport created by Capitalizts. Commerce Heights has participated in the following international events (sponsor organization in parentheses):

In these events, Capitalizts have won the following awards:

  • Harmony Cup 3—Champion
  • World Cup 12—Third Place
  • World Cup 15—Champion
  • Bribery World Cup 1—Third Place
